Organic Chemistry...

Hello fellow WashUers,

It seems like all my sophomore friends are taking orgo right now, but it's like horrendously gross to them. And apparently next year's orgo professor isn't going to be nearly as good as this year's? Not sure..
I'm a freshman right now, and I was wondering if it is worth it to take orgo over this summer instead?

Pros: get it over with; sophomore year will be relatively breezier by a LOT
Cons: miss opportunity to do an internship or something over the summer

Need your thoughts! :) Thanks!

ANDDD if you support orgo over the summer, what are some not so cut throat schools I could take it at? I'm from southern California... and it'd be nice if it was close to home. I was thinkin USC? No idea. Thanks again :)

Define “southern california.” I don’t want to list a school that would be a 90 min commute for you. You mentioned USC, so am I wrong in assuming LA?

Why can’t you do both orgo and an internship? There might be some school by you that will offer orgo 1, 2, and lab at night, and you can do an internship during the day.

^Thank you for taking the time to reply :]

Anyway, I live in San Diego, and I WOULD do it at UCSD but they only do quarter  So I’ve just been thinking of semester schools… And I have relatives living in LA as well, so schools in LA are also possible.
And I’m not sure if WashU takes credit from community colleges…? Would it also happen to reflect poorly on an application for med school?

Regarding BOTH orgo and internship, I glanced at USC’s schedule for orgo. Unless I found the wrong thing, class appears to dominate the day for all five weekdays, from May 18 to Aug 9 I believe. And thus my hope for internship is dying, if I take it at USC at least.

Thanks again!

^bumpp. Sorry, I reeeaaally need help with this! Or I guess it’s time to consult my advisor :]

If you are going to take orgo over the summer, don’t take it over at a community college, or that’s at least what my advisor told me. Taking it at USC or UCLA should be fine.
Doing it over the summer or not is really dependent on how important you think your freshman summer is. If you think you can do something big (ex. internship, research, volunteering etc.) instead of taking an orgo class, then it would be best to not take it over the summer. If not, then I guess you save a lot of trouble in sophomore year.

You also got to note that by taking orgo spread throughout a year and with a more rigorous and difficult workload may help with the MCAT much more, since you will be rushing through the orgo material in the summer.

If not UCSD, how about SDSU or USD?
