Orientation/Housing

Any info would be great on my current situation....

Orientation: Okay, for starters, I attend a DODDS school in Germany. I got accepted for fall, but my orientation dates are for JUNE. Do I have to go? My dad doesn't want to shell out money for a flight for a 2-day orientation, nor do I want to have to travel on a 9 hour flight twice over the summer.

Housing Question:
Can I still change my housing choices after the agreement is sent (I'm under 18 so had to send a signed agreement)? I put my choices as follows:
1. Landis (I'm petitioning to get into Honors...I met all 3 requirements, so I'm going to try...)
2. Reynolds
3. Gilchrist
4. Broward

....however, my priority number is extremely horrible--5159.

Should I change my choices, and to what? Would I have to send in ANOTHER signed agreement, or can I just make the changes online since my mom has already signed the first one? What if I find a roommate? Can I still add that to my housing agreement within the next few weeks? (I'm using uroomsurf.com...trying to find someone!

Extra Questions: In case I get placed in a community hall, how bad are they really? Also, is random roommate alright? They didn't ask very good questions for placement...one was "Are you an early riser? (before 8 AM) I put "no," but now I'm thinking I should change it as I do go to bed at a decent time if I have an early class...I'm kind of worried that I may get a night owl as a roommate.

...and, should I bring my TV with me to Florida? It's 32 inches...is there a place I could store it over summer break?

Thank you so much for any answers/help!! I appreciate it, as it is easier to ask here since calling FSU costs a lot with long-range calling from Germany!

You can EMAIL and ask admission about the orientation that is held only days before class starts. orientation@admin.fsu.edu For international students, and others with conflicts, there is always an orientation within the week before each semester starts. And I think you can move into the dorm early if orientation is before the dorms open. The drawback is registering later than others for class, but for a first semester freshman, there are plenty of gen ed requirement classes available and I don’t think it is a big deal. You might just get an 8am class, that’s all.

You have to pay to store things OFF CAMPUS between the end of freshman and the beginning of sophomore year, but there are lots of options, including boxing it and paying the locale UPS office to store it for the summer. They have special student storage and they pick up and deliver.

You can change the housing order ANYTIME up until they start doing housing assignment work, WHICH IS SOON but you can go on and change. Just sign on and change. To be honest, with your number it may not matter. BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS FILL OUT A CHANGE REQUEST and there are lots of changes during the summer months.

The community dorms are not that bad. You meet more friends that way. With your number you are likely to get a community dorm. There is only so many honors beds in Landis, and while there are some back up rooms in Gilchrist, those late to get an honors designation are likely not in either dorm. But it is not so bad. After you are there for 1-2 weeks, you will adjust.

Thanks!! :)

So should I change Landis to Wildwood, or Degraff (which do you recommend)? Do you know if I’d have to send another agreement?

Thank you so much, it is so hard for me to decide as I haven’t seen the campus!!

List Landis and Gilchrist first and second since you hope to be in Honors. I would then list Wildwood and Degraf. They are newer, they are the largest dorms, and your best shot. If you don’t get one of the four, the community dorms are what will be left with your number, and they are all about the same. Then, if you don’t get what you want, submit a change request. The info is at housing.fsu.edu. They will start offering you other options, and you have so many days to accept or turn it down. Then they might offer you another option. You don’t have to take an offer. There is a lot of movement over the summer when some students decide to go elsewhere, or get off the wait-list somewhere, or decide to stay home and do community college, or decide they don’t have the money to pay for expenses.

Thank you so much :)

Which dorms are best located, and best quality, if you don’t mind me asking?

Do you think I could still get into Reynolds? I still have to fill out the Wellness Agreement, and I’m thinking I may have a shot, as many students will not want to sign that contract!

YES! Reynolds is a shot because students don’t want to sign the agreement. But if you sign, your are agreeing to be alcohol free NOT JUST IN THE DORM. You can’t drink and then come back to the dorm drunk.

There are LOTS of posts about the dorms here on the FSU part of this website. Site and search and read about them.
