(Sorry if this is a stupid question, I've never used internet on a laptop before - not to mention, so far from home)

How do we connect to the internet on campus? I want to be able to sign up for classes ASAP using my own laptop (and also avoid those long lines x: )

Depends a bit. Mac or PC? The detailed instructions differ a bit, depending. And there will definitely be people at orientation who can help you.

if it’s a PC, then connect your laptop to “CruzNet”, which is the network that UCSC uses at orientation. they’ll ask for your id and pw. your id is your email (without the @ucsc.edu) and your pw for that email account. voila

Yeah I had orientation last week. I regret not taking my laptop. Its a lot easier. Plus, you won’t have to make line to get inside any computer lab. And its easy to log in. You need your Cruz ID or just log in as a guest.

I signed up for classes using an iPad in the Bay Tree Bookstore. A couple other people must’ve did the same thing as the browser was up and on my.ucsc.edu when I got there. :P

Also, if you have a smartphone like a Droid or an iPhone, those work perfectly fine for signing up for classes as well.

I actually brought a laptop today, an HP Quad-Core (Windows 7) laptop… but I have no idea how to connect to the internet (even using my house’s wireless internet). Everytime I click on the network icon, it says there are no networks available. When I open the Network and Sharing Center, and attempt to Connect to a network, a trouble-shooting message pops up! =[

Anyone familiar with HP/Windows 7? Not sure where I input “Cruznet”…

Did you check to see if you disabled your wireless via a switch/button? I know many HP laptops have an option where you can turn off your wireless and you probably hit it by mistake. I’m pretty sure that’s the issue, but if it’s not…plug in an ethernet cord directly to your laptop from your home router and check if the internet works.

Usually when you just open up your internet browser, you’ll be redirected to the Cruznet login page.
