Does anyone know where Reed students go during the optional Outdoor Orientation? If you decide to go is there an additional fee?

last year the kids had their choice of 5 or 6 trips. i believe there were 2 outdoor trips--one backpacking and the other a rafting/camping trip. there were also trips that were sponsored by SEEDS--Students for Education, Empowerment, and Direct Service. this is Reed's student services organzation. trips include working with the homeless, repairing houses, working with kids, and environment work. all of these trips take place around Portland. here's a link:

the seeds trip cost $40 and i believe the outdoor trips were either $75 or $80. my d went on the seeds trip working with the homeless. she had a great time and would do it again in a minute. it's a good way to meet people and form friendships based on similar interests. they stayed with one of the other groups in a house downtown (had to bring own sleeping bags and pillows) and worked at the local shelter during the day.

your student will receive information in the summer and will be asked to rank the choices. they try to accomodate everyone, but obviously some trips are more popular than others.
