I’m from the west and I was planning on taking the last orientation a couple of days before the school year starts. What do freshman typically do during those days they have to wait?
Shop for all the stuff for your dorm that you couldn’t bring with you in the flight. And getting set up. Bins. Bedding. Books. Winter coats etc.
Ok thank you!
There’s an Amazon locker on campus? I saw this…
Amazon Locker - Lopez
885 Centre St, at Boston College, Newton MA 02459-1148
This could help students who set up “Amazon Prime Student” accounts.
No need to use an Amazon locker. You can have packages sent directly to yourself (use your dorm address that you will get with your housing assignment) and you can pick the package up at the mailroom in McElroy or Newton. You will be notified via email from the mailroom staff when your package arrives.
Good to know… I thought the Amazon Locker would be faster, but I was mistaken.
I went to the last orientation last year and literally the day after it ended was move-in day for the rest of the freshman, Welcome week events start the day after that so there’s definitely stuff to do.
Move in day for first years. Such an exciting day for my d.
Didn’t know how it was nice having those students on hand to unload the car. It was great. So sad I’ll be on my own carrying her stuff this year.
To me, bedding is key, as all other stuff is not a must-have on day 1. So, bedding was purchased locally, washed, bagged, & boxed on checked as baggage (watch box size limitations).
Another alternative if the 'rents will be in town for move-in day is to ship stuff to the local hotel/motel instead of the dorm address. (Can be really long lines to pickup stuff, or it may not even be available for pickup yet since BC has no space to unload the truck so the stuff can sit in the truck until they free up space in the package room.)
So we shipped stuff to the hotel and just borrowed the luggage cart to load the car and then used teh Welcome Wagon sherpas to schlep the stuff upstairs.
I received a bunch of Target gift cards and was thinking of buying stuff on-line and picking it up at the local store in Watertown. Anyone have experience doing it this way?
local Target is great. BC schedules a bus to shuttle over there for an evening of shopping.
Of course, there are hundreds of colleges in Boston all checking in at the same time, so things could be out of stock when you arrive. (That’s why we took bedding the plane and picked up the rest locally, including at Target.)
btw: Bed Bath & Beyond is a good source for extra long twin sheets.
Go to your local Bed and Bath and pick out everything you need. All you have to do is pay for it and they will have it boxed and ready for pick up at Bed and Bath in Boston. Every student I know did this and it worked out great. Once you get to BC with all your stuff, the welcome wagon will help you unload. It works great!!!
