Orientation

Camille, transfer orientation is only one day long as far as I know. However, if you are not a transfer student you cannot go to transfer orientation. You must go to a regular orientation session, either a regular summer orientation session or the August session. Otherwise you won’t be able to register for classes. Besides the loss of income, you really need to go to orientation. It’s a good time and it’s really essential for getting oriented for school to start.

You do not get a list of textbooks when you register. You can access them on the Coop websie about 6 weeks before, but that’s only if the professor submits the info to the Coop. Some professors are either adamantly anti-Coop and don’t go through the Coop to get books, or else are absent-minded and don’t submit the books to the Coop. In that case you have to wait to the first day to get the syllabus, unless you want to contact the professor in advance.

I like to go to the Coop because it’s convenient. I can walk in after the first two class days and get all the books I need in 15 minutes. It’s expensive, but if you buy used it isn’t too bad. And you get 10% back in rebates, so it’s essentially giving you a discount to shop there.

They do not buy your books back at full price. Depending on the book, they will pay you anywhere from 50 or 75 cents to $50-$75 for expensive, in demand books.

Most, but not all classes, are one-semester classes. Some are one year classes, and these will usually be listed as 6##A or 6##B depending on the semester. These are usually required classes for certain majors. Plan your classes one semester at a time, because what you want to do in the future can easily change based on a single class or a single semester.

at what stage do we pick a professor? or can we? i’ve heard there are websites like ratemyprofessor.com that you can pick from, but when can we do this?

When you register for a class, you are registering for a unique class - the class that meeting in this building at this time on these dates taught by this professor. So, as you are choosing your classes, you are also choosing the professor. If you happen to have the flexibility to see more than one open section of a class at times you can conveniently make that class, you should choose the one that you think has the better professor. Pickaprof has grade distributions for various professors for the different classes they have taken.

are there any medical requirements for UT? I am a transfer student going to the orientation on June 15. I was not born in the U.S. but I am an American Citizen.

There is a basic immunization/health form to fill out.

oh ok. but do they need like my medical records or anything for the immunizations? because i know this one guy that goes to UT and he said that they needed his medical stuff or else they wouldn’t let him register for classes at the orientation last year. I am not sure if he was a U.S. citizen or not though.

How exactly do people go about finding orientation parties? Do they just tell us straight up or what?

There is a special medical form for students considered to be international

I am sure we filled out an immunization and health form for my daughter for UT last year but I don’t see anything that says people need one this year.

Here’s an article from The Daily Texan about West Campus Books which is a start-up that will buy your books for you and deliver them to your doorstep at price lower than the Co-op will charge.

I would also like to know the answer to mkose1’s question as well

That might be a good question for the Facebook group for the class of 2012 or the class of 2011, people who were at orientation last summer or the summer before.

If anyone wants info on how fraternity parties during orientation will work feel free to PM me and I will fill you in.

Guys usually need to be on a rush list to get in to events during orientation, girls don’t. As for finding out about them, I’d suggest talking to people you know who are already in fraternities or sororities at Texas, or else asking the “fratty” looking kids at orientation what they’re doing that night.

I don’t really know what non-fraternity parties go on during orientation, but I’m sure they happen.

Are you in a frat Lone Ranger?

Yes I am in a fraternity.

Bump. Are parents welcome to the transfer orientation? Or the better question is, is it normal for parents to come. My mom and dad want to check out the school where I will be spending the next three and a half years in…

ampzor, my parents want the same but I have spoken to NSS (new student services) and there is no orientation or special activities for parents. Parents are also not allowed to come with us in meetings, advising, tours, etc. My parents were bummed but they’ll tour the campus themselves while i’m doing my transfer stuff.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I will probley bring them but have them tour austin or something while I am doing the orientation stuff.

Trust me–you don’t want to be the kid with the clingy parents at orientation. You also don’t want to be the clingy parents. No one likes those parents, and the kid will be better off for it later.

Haha my parents LIKE being the clingy parents… atleast my dad does… but I am glad parents won’t be allowed “in” so to speak, because I doubt any college sophomores will have mommy and daddy trailing behind. Plus because they are so clingy, it would definitely hinder me from meeting anyone else.

Thought so. I am about to get stomped this coming fall…
