OSU Fisher vs. UM Ross

Hi everyone,

I was admitted into both OSU and UMich, and I am having a hard time deciding between them. I know people on this forum are very knowledgeable and can help me with this decision.

So about me,
Majoring in business or pre-law. Money is not an issue (upper middle class), but it is the main reason for my problem is whether UMich is worth the money. I live on the east coast, so I am out of state for both schools, but I received about 12k worth in scholarships per year at Ohio State, and nothing at Mich, making it exactly half as expensive (23k a year vs 46k a year with all expenses included). I know UMich is ranked better in business, about 20 spots on average (6 vs 26) if you average all of the prominent rankings. Is this alone worth the extra $90,000 that I would have to pay? Is there anything I could do at Michigan that could not be done at Ohio State? Which would be the best for my situation? I've been to both campuses and loved them both, so I am under an increasingly hard decision.

I know that people on this forum will tend to be a bit biased toward UMich, so I would appreciate if you could put that aside in your responses.

Thanks guys!

Since you can afford UMich Ross despite being out of state, definitely go there. The quality of student body is much better and Ross is one of the top 5 undergraduate business schools. A lot of kids land high paying jobs in investment banking and consulting. You’ll also find a much larger alumni base on Wall Street.

Think of it as a long term investment. If money were an issue, I might have suggested OSU because just going to Ross doesn’t guarantee you a higher paying job. As you said you can afford the school, go there, work hard, and you’ll be happier.

Did you already get into Ross? If not, one thing you need to consider is the possibility of you not be admitted to Ross. I had that dilemma when considering UVA versus getting admission to BC Carroll, and I opted for the latter.

I was accepted into UMich as a Poly Sci major, preferred admission to Ross results comes April 22nd, but I am certain I will not get in (preferred). I got into OSU but missed the honors (auto-admit into the business school) because I’m in the top 12% and not the top 10% of my (extremely competitive) graduating class. So I’m technically “Pre-Business” at both schools, although it is much easier to get into Fisher than Ross. I’m actually a VA native but am not considering UVa because it’s only a 2 year business program.

Don’t worry about getting in. Just keep your GPA at a 3.5 (which is not that hard in your first year) and get involved. With the new building Ross has also increased its enrollment. If you have good grades by junior year, can network, you will land a great job from Ross.
