I have been accepted as biomedical engineering major, but am also thinking of pursuing medicine. I have been accepted into the osu scholarship program but am curious as to whether it is good or bad to do a scholars program that isnt focused on my major but rather on my interest. In other words, will it be okay if I do the Health Science’s program (since i want to do med.) even though i am an engineering major?
The information in the scholars program says it does not matter. My son’s first choice was the politics/law program even though he is an engineering major. That program said over 1/2 their students are not in that major. The scholars program is externally focused, though there is some overlap with potential majors.
But is it worth doing that because you will be housed with people in the program, not in your major.
My son and I went to the scholars day program at the end of January. For some programs that are very popular and selective, students may not get into their preferred choice and will end up in a different program. Business and Health Sciences require that if a person wants in them that they put those as their first choice as they will not roll to the second choice students. With this said there will be several students in scholars programs that are not in their major.
@dmconn1 , I’m sure you know, but Biology scholars was another first only choice option. Which Biology is my intended major with a Pre-Med curriculum. I went with Health Science for the scholars program, as it can hopefully compliment my major and something I’m passionate about pursuing.
I am a first year in the Politics, Society and Law scholars program. We have many students that are not majoring in political science or thinking about pre-law in our program. Most scholars programs encourage different majors to apply to their programs to help diversify the experience. As long as you have a strong interest in the program, you should be fine. It might even be nice to be involved in a scholars community that is not focused on your major.
By which date, does confirmation on your assigned Scholars program come out ? Anyone ?
I think I remember it coming out around April 17th last year.
We were unable to make the scholars day so I appreciate any additional advice…
My son wanted to do ICE --but four men sleeping in a room together was not appealing to him so he opted for STEM and Green Engineering. Was it easier to get into those programs?
We focused on programs with better dorms. Although he put the media and marketing as number three.(Not sure if he would accept that–he definitely would NOT if it is four to a room again–as we see that is an option for the towers.)
Last question–did they mention how to handle housing when it comes out if you are considering Scholars?
My son was accepted in November and submitted his fee about 10 days later. I saw the charts posted previously–which showed the numbers that had submitted their acceptance fees and I expect him to be in the first round. The Housing website says that applications will start being mailed in Mid-March. However, it sounds like the Scholars decisions will not be made at that time. If he doesn’t get a scholars program that is appealling to him, he would applying for Engineering House.
Thanks for the help.
At the time that I filled out housing I had my Scholars program. However the Scholars department is very open to questions about housing. The Scholars part of the housing application is the very last section, so he would have to fill out the rest of the application first before putting down his scholars program. I would recommend waiting but I would definitely ask the Scholars program.
My daughter is in Biological Sciences Scholars. Through the Scholars Face book page (maybe even a Bio Scholars FB page) she met another girl also in Bio Scholars who accepted admission much later than my daughter. That meant the other girl’s housing contract opportunity came several weeks after my daughter had the option to complete her contract. My daughter waited until they both had access so they could request each other. (You get a number or some identifier that you use in the roommate request area.) They were placed in a four-person suite style room (two sets of bunks in a tiny sleeping area off of the main study social part of the suite). I have to say that the three roommates helped make my daughter’s freshman experience extremely positive. They just completed their housing for next year and are requesting to stay together. In her case, four to a tiny room turned put to not be a bad thing.
@winne15 thank u
Does anyone know if Scholars housing ends up being a different price than regular housing?
@maclaughlin same price as regular, they live in regular dorms just together
@argpirate10 There will still be people around you that are close to you in your major. Everyone takes the same-ish classes the first two semesters anyway. If you’re pre-med its worth it because you get people to study with and I believe some med-related opportunities that other students won’t get. Believe me I know some BME majors in H.S scholars it’s common
