Oswego, Oneonta, Cortland

Out of those 3, where are most students happiest?

Which is more generous with merit aid for an OOS student? I did read Oswego's specific scholarship amounts. I don't see them for Cortland or Oneonta.

Which would be better for an English or history major?

Which has local bus access to get you to a few stores, and some type of transit to the NYC area for breaks?

If you could only visit one of these, you were going to major in English or history, you were which one would you visit?

Which of these is less of a party school?

You might want to check the students comments at the website students review. Students post comments there and give schools ratings on various aspects. There are other college review sites you can search for where the colleges are rated by students. They are a good resourse in addition to posting here.

lilymoon, thanks. I have read that site. I found that none of SUNYs have exactly glowing reports on that site (at least not the 3 I just listed).....sigh. If you know of other student opinion sites could you please send a PM to me. Thanks for your help.

We have visited Oneonta and Cortland. Complaints we heard from Cortland students...No Town, nothing to do. Nice Campus.
Oneonta-great college town. Lots to do. Nice campus.
Party school- I've heard the term Stony-onta.

Cortland seems like a great school for athletes/phys ed majors although I don't know that for sure. Just a feeling I got walking around.
Oneonta-we came away from there thinking "what a great little town" .

Buses available from Cortland to NYC for sure (lots of kids from LI apparently). Bus from Oneonta to Rockland county for sure. Not sure about other counties.

D applied to Cortland. Oneonta does not have her major.

hayze, thanks. I read the same things about Oneonta. Both schools offer an English major, but I did read that one English major at Oneonta transferred out because he was given way too much material to read. He claims that students in other majors had little outside classwork. Who knows, and this one person's opinion dating back a few years. The bus info into NYC or Rockland is helpful info. What is your D interested in majoring in?

English Program at SUNY Plattsburgh

I know you're not asking about Plattsburgh but I'd like to give it a little "shout out". My older S is extremely happy there. The college is in the center of the town/small city with uptown being the newer section (nice big mall, fast food, everything you would need) and downtown being the older section where kids can walk to go to bars. Easy to call a taxi and they're very affordable. They have a 5 year Masters program for teaching so if your child is interested in either English or History, it might be nice to have the teaching option as a career in the future. Also, many LI kids have cars and it's pretty easy to catch a ride. They have a ride board in the Student Center but S hasn't needed to use it. It's also possible to set up a ride to Burlington, VT International Airport (there's a ferry that takes you from Plattsburgh to VT) and fly direct to NYC.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM.

Cortland is pretty much an athletic school--many Phys. Ed. teaching majors and/or athletic training.
I've only heard good things about Oswego.
Oneonta is known to be a big party school but kids get out of it what they put into it.

Originally she was interested in Elementary ed. She has decided to pursue speech pathology and perhaps minor in Spanish.

^^very nice!

We visited Oneonta and really liked the campus...thye are in the process of updating all of the dorms in the next 2-3 years. My niece is a soph. and not a partier at all. She does say it gets alittle boring on the weekends if you don't party, but she has been able to find a group to hang with. They have a great movie theater on campus that shows new movies every weekend. It seemed to be a vibrant campus with a fairly ecceltic mix. D was interested in the fashion program, but has since changed her mind, so Oneonta is off the list for now. We have not visited either of the other. I have heard really good things about Oswego lately, although the weather there is much colder and snowier than some other campuses. D2 really liked Brockport, very nice campus. D1 is at New Paltz and loves it.

I would say as with anywhere, SUNY schools are going to have the group of big partiers and those who do not...you get out of it what you put into it. Have heard stories from all types of schools...very expensive private, huge public...party scene is ther is you want it, but most cases there are plenty of things to do if you do not!
