Other ppl from your school?

How do applicants from the same school affect each other's chances applying to stanford? or any school for that matter? like if i know 2 people who have a better chance than me from a class of 175, am i screwed? or what?

Stanford does not officially set quotas on number of people admitted from any given region or school. The adcoms will definitely not be like "hmm, 3 from this school applied, but we don't want to accept more than 2 from any given school, so let's only look at the 2 more qualified ones."

However, I do think being the ONLY student applying from a school, or especially a large region, will increase your chances a little bit. For example, I bet if only a couple students applied from Wyoming one year, and they weren't quite up to par with other applicants (but still somewhat competitive), at least one would be admitted so Stanford could say they have students in all 50 states.

well.. i was about the top of the applicant pool at my h.s. for stanford ea... and i got deferred.. 4 people applied, 2 deferred, 2 denied. but then.... stanford hates berkeley. cause we whooped them in the big game... 41-6.. = P

thankfully for me, the valedectorian at my school forgot the deadline was december 15th so he didnt end up applying. not that he cares, he got into harvard and got a full-ride at UConn.

i actually think the number of people applying does really affect chances, especially for public schools. We've had people applying to Penn, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc. early action, and no school accepted more than one, and the one accepted was almost always the one w/ the higher class rank.

Still, correlation != causation.

way to bring in stats into this, haha

i've taken hardest courseload at my school and my only B came in a freshman P.E. course... will they take this into consideration when looking at my rank? and will they know my school's ranking system? (i.e. everyone w/ all A's no matter classes is rank 1?).

I come from a really small school (my class has about 70 people). Last year, 2 people applied to Princeton EA and 1 person applied to Stanford EA and all of them got in. Then again, they were all completely BRILLIANT and all wanted to be engineers (that helped the Princeton crew out because Princeton was really looking for engineers for their class of 2008). Anyway, those are the stats from my school last year, but keep in mind that last year's applicants were uber strong.

3 of the 4 EA applicants this year were deferred, myself included.

3 out of 4 EA applicants in my school were rejd/deferred.

from my school, the stats that I am aware of thus far for EA are:

4 denied
3 defer
1 accept

Stanford has not been kind to my school.

Last year (our first graduating class), only one girl (out of many, I'm sure) was accepted RD. There was one deferral EA, but she ended up getting rejected.

So far this year for EA I'm aware of 2 deferrals and 1 rejection. I'm not surprised at the 2 deferrals; they're smart and had the numbers, but I know they played it safe on the essays and that's what hurt them. I don't see RD being friendly to their applications.

basically no top schools have been kind to my school.. at least during the early round.

stanford: 2 deferred (both legacies.. siblings currently attend stanford), 1 rejected
harvard: 1 deferred (one of our class valedictorians)
yale: 1 deferred, 2 rejected (myself included)
nyu: 1 rejected
upenn: 1 rejected
MIT: 1 deferred
cornell: 1 rejected

only acceptees were duke (legacy) and caltech..

Stanford EA: 3 legacies (1 accepted, 2 deferred), 2 non-legacies (1 accepted, 1 deferred)...dont really think there is a pattern there...

Of course, if you're a public school local, it doesn't matter at all. It's all about Gunn High School, 34 accepted, 20 matriculated in the class of 2008. Woohoo! But I definately think they rarely take more than 2 from non-super-prestigious private schools outside of the bay area.

Stanford accepted 5 kids from my school early this year, out of a class of about 370. So they seem willing to take a lot from one place.

yeah, we had 5 EA acceptances and 5 deferrals from stanford, out of a senior class of 56....they don't mind at all...

basically almost my ENTIRE class is applying to stanford. This year we had in my opinion some of the best people apply and they were REJECTED. NO one got in early. Only a few students got deferred. I chalk that up to a student we had last year who applied ea to stanford then chose to go to Pton. Maybe he has put a stanford curse upon our school

Our school hasn't had anyone go to stanford for AGES until now... (one EA acceptance). Apparently it's been about 7yrs since someone from our school got into Stanford (I know for sure its been at least 3yrs), and all this time we've had quite a few ppl go to pton, harvard etc.

Two others applied RD here, one was a Harvard deferral, the other got in early to G-Town. Now I have to compete with them, great...
