other schools your applying to

On the supplement, is it bad to put schools like harvard, dartmouth and georgetown? will they think i'm just using GW as a safety school and reject me? i mean, that is what i'm doing, but i want to go to GW and would be ok if it was the only school i got into and was rejected from all the top-flight ones. so should i put worse schools on the list?

Of the 9 schools I’m applying to, I didn’t list all of them, and I listed more of the ones academically below GW. No real rhyme or reason to it though.

i HIGHLY recommend you to NOT put down other schools such as dartmouth, harvard, or other ivies, bc that would clearly make GW seem to be ur safety or last hope school…they like to see interesttt!

yea i was thinking theyd be impressed by the big name schools… but that doesnt make sense lol. ill put BC fordham and maybe a few other ones like that. and theyll never know i tricked them ha ha !

Its not a requirement to mention other schools your applying to, it may only be a benefit for those who are stating GWU as their top choice ( ED apps).

I assure you, you won’t be tricking GW admins thenatural. They have an uncanny knack for sifting through the applications and choosing good fits with high interest in the school. make sure your application explains why you would be happy to attend GW.

my essay is good and talks about how I love DC and politics and all that, but do you think i should leave out georgetown and harvard? i mean obviously people would take georgetown over GW any day, but there’s no guarantee to getting into those schools… i dont know what to do… i seriously have interest in GW, just not as much as i have in cornell or Gtown…

thenatural, no it’s not obvious that “people would take Georgetown over GW any day.” My daughter attended GW and had no interest in Georgetown after visiting there. It didn’t have her major and the atmosphere at GW seemed more energetic and interwoven with the city. The above noted attitude may come through in your application and doom it. Loving politics and D.C. doesn’t mean you love GW.

I have to second what researchmaven says. My daughter transferred to GW this year. She applied to both GW and Georgetown and did not visit either before the start of school. It’s true that Georgetown has a rep out there as the “better” school and kids seem to think they will have really won the big prize if they get in there. In my daughter’s experience, however, when she finally visited Georgetown to see her many friends attending Georgetown, she was oh so grateful that she hadn’t gotten in there. It has a much more removed and insulated campus and after having attend boarding school, she has moved beyond that. She loves the city atmosphere at GW, her rigorous classes and her almost daily opportunities to interact with world-renowned speakers with countless areas of expertise. She values the student diversity and the vast array of activities and involvements that wouldn’t have been available to her at the smaller Georgetown campus. With full knowledge now of both schools, my daughter would choose GW without hesitation.

thenatural, you seem to be a bit delusional about GW,…i myself was admitted to schools such as georgetown and tufts in addition to gw…and for me, i couldn’t see myself anywhere else than at gw…gw has a better location than Georgetown and tufts, and while gw may not be ranked as high in rankings in terms of academics as those schools, it still does not deny the fact that gw still offers a prestigious and rigorous academic program…im not putting down georgetown or tufts, dont get me wrong, they too are excellent schools, but to assume that “obviously everyone will choose georgetown over gw” is a bit naive…and just an fyi, talk about “tricking” admissions officers will not help you considering admission reps from gw and other schools frequently go on here and read people’s posts…so be careful not to come off as invincible and arrogant

i just want to know should i put good schools on this part of the supplement. and i’m still not sure as to what to do…

edit: and why do you all say GW has a better location? some people may not like being in the middle of the city. some people may prefer a quiet area overlooking DC, like georgetown. see you all did what i did except you’re talking up GW and i was just trying to point out Gtown is more prestigious.

Either put down the true schools you are applying to or, if you don’t feel comfortable with that, just don’t fill that section out. You can leave it blank; it’s not required. But really, make sure you know why you are applying to GW and what you love about it and if you don’t like being in the middle of a city and want a more traditional campus, reconsider your application.

How does GW use this question for ED applicants?

My D listed all of her schools but then decided to go EDII. She left the schools on the application. I think listing the schools would be OK if the list was balanced somewhat. Maybe just one of your schools that is ranked above GW?
