Otterbein at Unifieds

I searched but did not find a clear discussion of the process. I wondered if they do any dance. I contacted the school and their email indicated a 15 minute audition slot and everything done during those 15 minutes? The general audition guidelines say to bring dance clothes but maybe that is only for on campus auditions. If anyone attended the Unifieds last year for Otterbein please chime in. I sent another email to the school but suspect I will not hear back till after the weekend.Thanks.

School is back in session on Monday, so I’m sure you’ll get a response then. For what it’s worth, son auditioned in 2014 in Chicago, and there was no dance call. BAL!!!

Thank you. Does your son go there? When I emailed I specifically asked for the dance audition time so when I did not get a “we do not do dance” at unifieds response was surprised. Thought I had missed something. Clearly need to be more direct on Monday, ie do “you have a dance call at Unifieds” :slight_smile: Did not realize the school was still on break.

Son is a sophomore BFA Acting major. He auditioned for BFA MT and was accepted for the Acting program, and chose Otterbein instead of his two MT acceptances. He is very happy in his program and with his classmates. The MT and Acting majors take the majority of their classes together, but not all. Son flies back today. Please feel free to PM me :slight_smile:

This may help - or confuse you more, lol. We were also confused last year about the Otterbein audition. There definitely was not a separate dance call, but instructions said come prepared to dance. So what to wear - nice audition clothes? Dance clothes? We were able to speak to someone from the school the day before the audition, who said D should wear shorts under audition dress. However, there was never any dancing!
Otterbein was my D’s first audition at Unifieds Chicago 2015, on a Monday morning. There was a major snowstorm - most of the faculty had not arrived; only the head of the dance department was there. Monologue and songs were videotaped because of their absence. She was never asked to dance. No clue if this was because they were running behind.

Thank you all for the responses. Makes no sense but maybe they just talk about your dance experience or have you try and do a couple of steps:)

Two years ago, The D auditioned for them at unifieds and they talked about her dance experience. I would suggest wearing clothes you’d be comfortable to move in just in case they ask to see a lil sumthin.

There were other really well respected MT schools that did not do a full dance call at unifieds - Ithaca didn’t (idk if they do on campus) CMU doesn’t do a dance call at either campus or unifieds

My daughter is graduating from Otterbein this spring . . . things may have changed, but here’s the way it worked when she auditioned at Chicago Unifieds. She went in, took her jazz shoes with her. She did her song and monologue. She was asked if she was a “dancer.” She said, “Not really, but I’m happy to try” (or something to that effect). She had been taking dance, but knew she wouldn’t be considered a dancer-dancer. They told her to not worry about it, so she did not dance in the room.

However, if she had told them that she was a dancer-dancer, the head of the dance department from Otterbein (who was in the room) would have given her a simple routine to do.

Again, things may have changed. Don’t be afraid to call the theatre department to ask for clarification.

Thank you. My daughter is a dancer. Will contact and get a clarification, but it sounds like your daughters experience is probably what they do currently. Thank you.

@kksmom5

Do you know if Otterbein will cut an auditioner off if they go over the 3 minutes? D is right at the mark so you never know with nerves, etc.
