I am new to the college confidential scene and am just learning my way around. When clicking on Otterbein under the colleges listed for musical theatre schools all of the discussion is older and I can’t seem to find anything for those applying now for the fall of 2009. I have a few questions after going to the Otterbein website. If you have to be accepted first before you can audition, then are acceptances at this school based mainly on grades and SAT’s and the audition only is granted afterward? I am assuming then it is a contingency type thing…if you are accepted to the school, you can then audition, and then we will make our decision based on your audition. If you aren’t accepted because your grades and SAT’s aren’t high enough, then obviously they don’t grant you an audition. Am I understanding this correctly?

Also wondering if you increase your chances by applying as an MT/D or just a plain MT. If your dance is decent but not your shining point would your chances be better to just go plain MT or should you give the dance a try. OR could a decent but not excellent dance audition hurt your chances. A triple threat with singing and acting as major strength and dance as a minor strength. Easily picks up dance but might not stand out.

Finally there is nothing that I could find about teacher recommendations online. Should you send in letters of recommendation or do they not want these.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hey! I applied about a month ago and just heard back last week. Their app was the easiest one, it is just the online one and then send transcript/scores. They then will send you an acceptance letter and info about scheduling an audition.

As for the dance, that is a great question. If I were to attend Otterbein I would like to do dance as a minor, but I didn't state that on my application. Does anyone who specifics about this?

My d. applied right when the applications went up. Check with their website, but I'm not sure if any rec. were needed. I can tell you that they were fast getting back as far as academic acceptance - she even got quite a large scholarship. However, I don't think any of this much matters if she doesn't make it through the audition. By the way, you need to set up your appt. for the audition through an e-mail I believe to a Mrs. Hall. Again, check the website, but they look over your whole application quickly. Good luck.

"Once you have applied for admission to Otterbein, you may make an appointment for your BFA audition in Acting or Musical Theatre... Make sure you apply in enough time to be admitted to Otterbein College by your audition date."

We just want to make sure that students apply for admission before they schedule an audition. It is easily done on-line, and our Admissions Office processes applications quickly. If a student is not admissable to the College, we will notify them before the audition, so that they can save themselves the trip. But we frankly assume that most applicants to our BFA programs in Acting and Musical Theatre will be admissable; that's certainly been our experience over the years.

As for MT vs. MT/D, it makes no difference. All MT applicants do a dance audition. Those who tell Stella Kane, our director of dance, that they're interested in the dance concentration, will be asked to demonstrate their training. It only takes a minute. There is no separate quota for MT/D majors.

Finally, we do not ask for teacher recommendations.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any additional questions.
