I agree. I unfortunately was not accepted to the MT program, but my audition there at unifieds was one of my favorites! Dr. John, you and the other staff are wonderful and definitely the friendliest that I have run into. You are a school where I feel like the auditors really care about what is best for the prospective student. The personal attention really does set you above other schools. You don't find that many places!

Thanks for acknowledging the others who post. My son did not audition for those schools so they didn't show up on my radar!

So I 've been reading back on this thread, and also on the OC link here.> [Otterbein College Department of Theatre and Dance - Home Page](http://www.otterbein.edu/theatre/degreeprograms.asp)

My D unfortunately wasn’t accepted for MT BFA, but she really loved the school. I haven’t been able to find yet if a straight Theatre BA needed an audition or interview. I see the Arts Admin and directing BA’s require an interview [Otterbein College Undergraduate Admission - Department of Theatre and Dance Auditions and Awards](http://www.otterbein.edu/Admission/talent-theatre.asp) but I can’t find a definitive requirement for admission as a straight Theatre BA. If anyone knows, please feel free to share.

Guess I’ll Drop Teri an email tomorrow for clarification on this.

My daughter is currently a freshman BA Theater major at Otterbein. She was required to have an interview which she did by phone since we were from out of state. Hope this helps!

Do students auditioning for the MTD program need an equally strong background in all three Jazz, Ballet and Tap?
Also, how challenging are the dance classes for the regular MT students?

Carlita92:

I checked with Stella Kane, our director of dance, and she confirmed my belief that we want to see a strong background in ballet and jazz; we’re not as concerned about tap.

In answer to your second question, we teach ballet, modern, jazz and tap at four levels from beginning through advanced, and we place our MT (and Acting) students appropriately in each technique. It’s not unusual for some “regular MT” majors to be taking advanced dance in one or more techniques by the time they’re seniors, even if they are not in the MTD track. However, we do expect to be able to place MTD majors in Advanced ballet and jazz as incoming freshmen.

Hope this helps. Feel free to write to me directly if you need more information.

Thanks so much doctorjohn! that’s what i was hoping to hear. I am really looking for a school that has a good dance program because all three disciplines (voice, acting, and dance) are all equally important to me. I am also glad to hear that tap is not a huge concern because i have a stronger background in the other areas of dance.
Thanks again, and ill be sure to let you know if i have any more questions!

You’re welcome! Hope to see you this year sometime.

i have a few questions regarding the dance concentration–

how many do you usually accept for MTD? how many male/female?
and how does one indicate that they are interested in the MTD? is it a separate audition from regular MT? are there usually more auditioning for MT or MTD?

thanks!

dancerr625:

The numbers vary from year to year, depending on how many MTDs we have, and how many we see at auditions. In this year’s fall class, we have five men (no MTDs) and three women (all MTDs). We would have preferred to have had at least one male MTD in the class.

You indicate your interest in the MTD by telling us at the audition, whether on-campus or at the unifieds. You’ll still learn the same routine as everyone else, but Stella will keep you onstage a bit longer to talk about your training and demonstrate it.

We usually have more MTs than MTDs auditioning.

Hope this helps!

See post #24 on the following thread for a discussion of blended Acting and MT programs vs. stand-alone programs, and why we have chosen to be the former:

We visited last Friday with my daughter. A good visit. She is not interested in MT, but wants to do the dance minor with another related major such as PT or exercise science. We were very impressed with the strength of the dance minor and it really seems like a major.

For those who want to visit Otterbein and catch a show while there, the '10-'11 theatre season has now been posted: [Otterbein University Art Scene: Theater Performances](http://www.otterbein.edu/artscene/theatre/index.asp)
