Dear DoctorJohn,
I love the sound of your program!! I'm just wondering (since you only accept 8) what are you looking for in an applicant? The admission percentages of some of these schools blow me away! Any thoughts, tips, advice for a hopeful student would be greatly appreciated!!!Thanks!!!

Thanks for your interest in our program. The question you ask is a frequent one, and I've given several answers to it. I want to take the time to come up with something that's consistent. It may take another week before I can get to it. Thanks for your patience!

That's fine, thanks for responding!!

Sorry if this question was already asked but there are so many different posts that I didn't have time to look through them all!

I got a letter today that I am still being considered for the programs at Otterbein. I am thrilled!!! My audition at LA unifieds was so inviting and the program sounds wonderful. I was wondering how many applicants advance to this round. I know that Otterbein is extremely selective, and was wondering how much of a chance I have of getting in. Thank you for your help in advance!!!

Did anyone else get letters like this? I got a postcard that thanked me for auditioning about a week or so ago, but no results (unless I'm totally reading that postcard wrong!). I auditioned at the Chicago unifieds.

I auditioned at the Chicago Unifieds as well and just got the letter today saying that I was still in the pool of applicants being considered. I am sooo happy!

We sent letters last Monday to everyone who auditioned after January 30, including everyone we saw at Unifieds. (The letters may not have reached the post office until Tuesday.) If you don't receive your letter by Monday, please call the department office and confirm the address we have for you. We'll be happy to send you another copy.

Thanks to everyone who auditioned for us. You're going to make our decisions very difficult indeed.

Still being considered as well! I am so excited!!

I did some searching of old posts and I found a pretty good answer from a year ago to your question about what we're looking for. It's on this thread, on page 19, post #282. Click here to go there:

Hope this helps.

doctorjohn-thank you so much! that helps a lot, and is well said! thanks again for responding! look forward to auditioning!

Do those who audition as late as March still have a chance or are most of the slots taken by then?

I hope Dr. John will add his two cents - but they don't fill up any "slots" at all until after the last audition. That's why they use the "you're still in the pool" process. Those who have made it into that narrowed down group of applicants are all still waiting. The acceptance decisions aren't made until after the last audition.

Great to know. Thanks MTMama.

A student speaking with parents today said they set up the 8 MTs and the 8 Acting BFAs accepted with a second set of 8 and 8 behind them (of coure you will not know if you are one of these), so when one says no, they pull from the second 8 to fill the slot. Saw the juniors perform tonight, no cookie cutter types, all individuals. Missed you, Dr. John, have fun reviewing the audition videos.

The Moms are correct: we don't make any offers until everyone has had the opportunity to audition. To do otherwise would be unfair to students auditioning at the end of the season. We will be meeting in a couple of weeks to choose the 8 men and 8 women (8 MTs and 8 ACTs) who will be invited to join next fall's class. We will also choose a second set of 16 who will be notified that they are on our waiting list. When someone who received a first-round offer turns us down, we go to the student who is on the waiting list for that person's slot.

So I look forward to seeing you soon, turtlesinger. I apologize for missing last weekend's auditions. My wife and I were at a memorial service in California. But I'll be looking at the videos tomorrow night.

I'm glad you enjoyed the juniors, Mom4X. They're a great class.

Thank you. We look forward to seeing you and auditioning as well!

doctorjohn, sorry to hear of the loss of someone you cared about. I extend my sympathy.

Thanks, Susan. I appreciate the thought.

doctorjohn, my son auditioned Saturday 2/28. His audition experience was awesome. Teri especially was so warm and welcoming. The students were sweet and professional. Good job!!

I really wanted to comment on the fact that you post here. I think it shows the type of character you have taking precious time to respond to parents who are otherwise a nervous wreck. None of the other schools show that kind of attention. Regardless of whether my son is offered a spot at Otterbein, please know that you have single-handedly made us move "personal attention" to the top of our criteria list! It makes a difference! Good luck on your recruiting and we'll keep our fingers crossed!!

Terri:

Thanks so much for the kind words. I'm very glad your son had a good experience last weekend. I forwarded your comments to Teri Devlin. We think she's terrific.

Thanks too for the comment on my posting. It does take time to write, but I know that the resulting lowering of tension benefits everyone, especially the students. However, I want to acknowledge that I'm not the only one of us who posts. Kate at James Madison (KatMT), Michele at Florida State (All4FSU), and Ken at Coastal Carolina (kjgc) have been especially helpful and generous with their time.

Best wishes to you and your son.
