Our Fresh New Look Is Here

I would hate to see so many good CCers leave because of a poorly thought out change to the website.

And I don’t appreciate having to download additional programs to eliminate the annoying ads.

@skieurope, you are an exceptional 22 year old. ? These developers were average or below.

Just noticed that when I misspell a word and click on it for a correction, the correction flashed into view, but disappears before I can tap on it. iPhone XR, iOS 12.1.4.

How did we get to 2 lines of “response icons”? We don’t need pictures and words - make it one line to get rid of some of the awful white space. And as if anyone EVER shares to FB - what part of “College Confidential” has this site forgotten about. I bet no one ever uses that feature - just get rid of it.

As others have said, double spacing when typing a response is stupid and hard to navigate.

And as someone pointed out upstream, we STILL can’t bookmark a forum, which was the #1 gripe from the last redesign.

Right now I feel like I’m just fighting with the interface. What I want to feel when I come here is that I can quickly maneuver to find posts by students and parents that I could help them with. I can easily see past conversations I was involved with, and quickly read and post as needed. None of this is easier, all of it is harder.

In summary, this upgrade has taken us further from optimal usability, not closer.

It is strange that people who redesigned it prioritized the name and icon of the poster and not the actual thoughts and content of the post. It is almost as if they think CC is facebook where we scroll looking for our friends rather that a discussion where (at its best) each post builds upon the thoughts of the previous one.

On the phone, how do you search within a thread?
One thing that always annoyed me about this site, is that there is no easy way to quoteback to a previous thread without using copy paste and HTML links. We still don’t have that!

I’m going to get piled on for this but… I kinda like it.

I understand a lot of the individual objections, and enthusiastically agree with some (like the double-space thing), but overall I think for a site that relies on frequent turnover for survival, it’s a good thing. Businesses ignore trends at their own peril. NewCoke is not the right example – WordPerfect is. (Old timey dos folks will get that reference). Or maybe MySpace.

A few tweaks based on feedback, a little time to get used to things, and everything will be ok. Old timers please hang in there, the n00bs will still need you!

–Navigation from one forum to another is near impossible.
–Frustrated that I had to put an add-on to disable a lot of that absolutely horrible video ad. I was not able to stop the aid from my preferred browser so for now I will have to remember to open a new different browser to access CC.
–Hate that you see so much less per page. Nobody needs all that white space. It is now more time consuming to look at the new posts and replies to older posts quickly
–And nobody wants that page listing most active members.
As things stand I will be coming to CC way less frequently. I’d be happy to give up my Forum Champion position at this point.

I am NOT a fan. The add is WAY too distracting; too much scrolling. Since I am only active in the Cafe, I am not interested in researching workarounds. I’ll check back in a couple of days. Hope to see either major improvements or an option to revert to a classic format.

Deleted.

That feature (present on most web forums using similar base software) was probably intentionally removed to avoid a common problem on other forums where someone will quote an entire other post without trimming it down to the relevant lines and a one word comment or reply.

As this post shows, it is possible to do the same thing in a less convenient manner using copying and pasting and forum markup.

It would be more convenient if the “reply” button prefilled the reply box with something like:

<a href="paste%20limited%20quote%20here">QUOTE=suzyQ7;22325039</a>

[/QUOTE]

to make it easier to reference the previous post in a reply.

The easiest thing to do, imo, is to add to favorites on your computer the forum(s) you like to frequent. I’ve always had Parent Cafe in my favs. One click and I’m in. But I rarely visit any other forums on this site so I don’t have to have specific CC forums or sub forums cluttering up my fav list.

Didn’t know that about the numbers and turning the phone. That’s like a party trick.

Impossible to use on an IPhone

Bookmark a thread by clicking the ribbon icon next to the cog icon, by the thread title (in Bookmarks or Latest.)

Another vote against the new format. Agree with far too much white space. The graphics telling you the posted date are greyed out (on my PC), instead of bold or front and center, so not only is it more difficult to read, it takes too many steps to reach the end of a thread (to find where I left off since my last visit.).

I understand always wanting to improve, but sometimes when things work fine, it’s best to leave it alone! Was anyone complaining?

When I go to my home page, my avatar is missing the right quarter of the photo @CCadmin_Sorin

Yep, definitely a crotch shot. Nice.

Sorry but cracking up here… Just noticed that

It took me a day to find this thread - the navigation is brutal. I use to see about 20 threads in a forum on a page, now I see like 4. Is there an obvious setting to change this? Too much wasted space - condense things please! No “save draft” for posts anymore? The formatting isn’t just me being un-adaptable, it’s just not good.
And on USC site - one of the most active communities on here, the “Featured Thread” is from 2014 and is just a few posts, like 5 pages long. Hardly a standout. I figured that will fix at some point???
Lastly, I am confused by “those most active” being such a highlighted feature - are we supposed to get competitive on here posting like mad to get these weird points? Maybe it was always there, but now I see it, and frankly find it kinda weird.

That’s all for now, hoping for at a minimum - things to be condensed better and navigation made easier.

Hi - the page font is too large for mobile format. Can there be any opportunity to offer preference for font size.
Thanks

@evergreen5 , maybe your imagination? Still grey and too small on my iPad, my desktop, and my android cell. I am wondering who is seeing huge font and on what device? I wish, haha.

On my android cell phone, the forum page lists only four categories of Discussion Topics: college admissions and search, professional and graduate school, precollege issues, and college confidential community. Nothing says Top Forums on android. There is no box displaying the individual topics in Top Forums, as there is on my desktop and ipad. There is a category called Highlights, which includes latest posts, activity, my bookmarks, my threads, my drafts, and most helpful posts, whatever that means.

When you click on the Most Helpful posts, there are random posts from random threads that have no helpful votes at all. Again, scratching my head.

If I continue to use CC, I will have to do so only from the ipad. Luckily, it does not display the continuous video advertising. I totally loathe that the video is on my desktop.

So I was thinking about how to describe the way this redesign feels. When I am on a specific thread, as I am right now, it feels isolated and disconnected to the rest of the site. For example, right now, on the right, it’s giving me two options for Featured Discussions. One is from 2013, called Closed Intro Courses? The other is called Best Housing for Transfers? from May 2016. (Of course, I can’t even see those options without scrolling down past the video.) What the heck do those featured discussions have to do with this thread right now? Why would I want to read about those? Again, I feel like I’m reading some random Word Document, @CCadmin_Sorin , but I do appreciate your update.

@makemesmart , I have seen several posts from younger people here who say they don’t like this redesign. I’ll see if I can find them. I’ve only seen one post from someone who says they like it. I haven’t read every post, I admit.
