Out of State Admissions

I continue to hear that it is extremely difficult to be accepted to Stanford from outside of California. Is there any validity to this? Would I have an awful time applying from New York to Stanford?

It’s difficult to get in period. The reason they have more Californian students is because more apply from California. It doesn’t hurt to try. Good luck.

The admissions committee confirmed Renomamma’s answer. In fact, they look for students with a diversity of backgrounds, so if you come from NY or a small farming community or somewhere really cold or really hot or otherwise different from the rest of their applicant pool, it can only help you.
You’ll have an awful time because you’re trying to get into a school with a 7% acceptance rate (5% RD) haha, not because you’re from NY.

A better way to ask this question is: for two identically qualified applicants, will the one from CA have a better chance of admission? Alternatively, is the acceptance rate for CA applicants Higher or lower than national average for Stanford? Any ideas?
