Out of State Experience

I was recently admitted to UT Austin, and I'm very excited about it. This school has everything I'm looking for (big, cool location, warm weather, academic programs for my interests) but I have some concerns.

I am Jewish and from New York, and most of my friends are Jewish. I know that no matter where I go to college, I will be in a more diverse environment. I'm looking forward to meeting and becoming friends with people from various walks of life, but I'm not sure if UT Austin will be too much of a culture shock for me. Also, I'm not sure how open and friendly UT is to Jewish students.

Should I maintain my interest in UT, or is it unlikely that I will fit in? Please be honest in your responses. Thank you!

I am sure you will fit in! I am involved in Texas Hillel and have many friends who are active at Chabad. In both organizations, I have met many people from out of state who are enjoying UT and Jewish campus life.

Do check out Hillel and Chabad before you arrive. Hillel is good sized and active. That will give you a good start toward meeting other Jewish students. There is a Jewish frat, too, yes?

Yes, I know of three Jewish frats: Alpha Epsilon Pi, Zeta Beta Tau, and Sigma Alpha Mu (also known as Texas Sammy). I don’t know as much about Chabad, but Hillel has been very welcoming. It has had several get-togethers to meet new people (like a move-in brunch, ice cream social, and information sessions about clubs and volunteering) besides its weekly Friday night services and dinners. In addition, during the summer orientation sessions, Hillel had BBQs for freshmen. Like @Lizardly‌ said above, I would definitely recommend visiting. The staff are very friendly and are happy to take students on tours and talk about Judaism or other interests. I’ve seen several prospective students at Shabbat services this fall.
