I know it's rather costly to attend UMich as an out of state student, so is there not very much financial aid that is offered?

i received a lot of need based financial aid, actually more than Cornell and way more than CMU.

Overall, Michigan is not as generous as some universities, but many OOS students get excellent merit and need based aid.

A girl at my school got a full ride, and I live in Illinois.

If you are an outstanding student, way up there in stats, you may get financial and/or merit aid from UMich even as an OOS. I have seen some generous packages from there. However, this is not a school to count on it happening, as it neither guarantees to meet need, does not give a lot of merit money as compared to many schools of its calibre, and because it does have some guidelines to take care of its own state residents first.

I was in the upper-25% range in ACT/GPA, and i got no financial aid with the exception of an unsubsidized 3k loan.

So I guess unless you're the next Stephen Hawkings, don't count on it.

Generally, people I know who applied to schools approximately the same price range as Michigan (Vandy, Emory, Wash U, the Ivies, Boston College, Boston U, Chapel Hill, UCs, and the UVA) got less/no need-based money at Michigan.

By the way, if you apply for financial aid and get ~2-7K in loans, that's just the minimum amount of financial aid. As in, Michigan is required to give everyone who applies for aid something, which usually means a small high-interest loan.

I think when I went to orientation they say about 800 people get merit-based scholarships per class. Oftentimes, these scholarships are given to the "underprivileged" and "underrepresented"...and they don't always get who needs the "boost" right.

Oh, this might be because I applied late, but I got my scholarship notifications throughout April, May, and June (they were a bunch of small ones for different things).
Yeah, applying early is probably good for scholarships and being invited to the scholarship tours and stuff that everyone else I know with the same stuff as me did...apparently there's a scholarship deadline that I decided not to pay attention to, not that I expected anything anyway?
