Im an out of state student and I currently attend Georgia State University. My home state is new york but i didnt feel like any of the colleges were for me. When i got accepted to gsu, I began to realize that I couldnt afford it. I still went and was determine to stick it out for one year and then apply for residency to get instate tuition. I only did part time because thats all i could afford. Being full time I would be paying for over 14k a semester and that didnt include room and board. Fortunately I have family down here and resided with them but after the first month i hated it. The commute is over an hour and the buses run on a limited schedule meaning I have to wake up at 5 am in the morning and not reach home till 7. On top of that im busting my ass to provide for myself working two jobs. I do this because I really want to attend this school and believe that its the best choice regarding my major. But now i regret it. Im in the process of doing everything to get residency, paying taxes etc only to find out i cant because my mother claimed me on her taxes and she doesnt reside in the state. I wasted a whole freaking semester and a half just to go here. Im so tired, and its affecting my health. I have had consistent head aches for the past month and developing irregular breathing. I just want to leave in the middle of the semester and go back home and attend a ny state school in the fall. Im basically doing all of this for no reason i couldve been in a college dorming and focusing on the primary reason I came to school which is for my education. Im only a freshman in college and i feel like a 40 year old. I dont even know if im going to get into a good college in ny now cause my gpa is so freaking low because school has become my second priority. It disgust me that a university cant do anything for out of state student. Like all i want is an education. Im ready to quit. What should i do?

Ideally, you should speak with your advisor about your current options at your U. Since you have already paid for this semester, I’d STRONGLY suggest that you do your best to get the best grades you can in your courses. If the load is too tough, see about reducing your work or school load until it is manageable and can improve your health.

Transferring back to a CC or other NY school, where you are a resident sounds like a good idea.

Irregular breathing and headaches sound like something that should be checked out by your doctor or student health center. Take care and good luck!

In this case, your mother claiming you as a dependent didn’t make a difference. The general rule is that your state of residency is determined by where your parents live and file taxes at least until you are 24. There are exceptions but from what you wrote you are not independent.

Thank you guys so much it really helps a lot. Sometimes I feel alone in this whole process so I appreciate your help! And yea my health is primary right now I think its due to stress so im going ti check it out. And for dependency thank you my school didnt clarify that so i was under the assumption that my parents taxes didnt pertain to my residency. But thanks again!!

From a quick look at the GSU website, it looks like being claimed as a dependent on an out-of-state parent’s taxes is indeed a key element in determining whether a student qualifies for in-state tuition. But in any case I don’t see why OP is blaming the university. The information is all there on the website, and if he had any doubts, he could have inquired before committing to GSU. It was truly foolish to make assumptions about the in-state requirements. I don’t see how someone could make a major decision about what college to attend without figuring this stuff out in advance. And where were OP’s parents in this mess? Meanwhile, there are so many four year and community colleges in the New York State system, I’m sure OP can find a place to continue his education after completing this semester.

Just googled. Georgia state has great merit for out of state students. See this link or if it doesn’t work google. There is a page of awards for OOS based on HS GPA, etc…
