Out of State Tuition-Possible Scholarships

My son is an honors student in PA and has a 4.34 GPA and 2050 sats. He always wanted to go to Clemson and now that his dream school is out, he really wants to apply to Clemson. He did get into Penn State which offered him some $ but it is not where he wants to be. Can anyone who is out of state tell me if they got enough or close to enough scholarship money to apply? Both Penn State and Clemson are close on in state and out of state tuitions. I am willing to have him go to Clemson if there is a chance for him to get as close to the in state tuition as possible b/f financial aid. Thanks for any replies!

I’m guessing your son is in the top 10% of his high school class? If so, he’ll get at least $5,000/year with the possibility you could get up to $15,000 in merit scholarships (depends on the stats of other people who apply that year but your stats look pretty good!). Clemson also offers additional academic scholarships to about 15% of freshman so you may get additional money but I can’t really tell you how much money you are going to get. (hard to tell) Good luck! I’d apply to Clemson, see how much money you get and go from there.

My son just finished the app. I just became aware of possible scholarships for out of state students. Don’t ask why but I thought it would only be offered to in state. I cannot tell you how much your reply meant. I know any $ is not an absolute but the possibility makes it easier to apply knowing it maybe affordable.

As a reference, we’re OOS also, and my D got $10,000 with 2170 SAT and 4.56 GPA. The difference between IS and OOS tuition is about $16,500.

If this helps…S (out of state)had a 4.0 unweighted/4.3 weighted, top 10% and 2010 SAT. He got $5,000 initially and another $1000 with his financial aid offer. Unfortunately, not enough money for him to attend. Good luck.

One more point of reference… DD had 31 ACT, 3.99 UW GPA, school does not rank and received 10K scholarship. SAT’s I think were 2080.

We too are in PA, and she will be attending Clemson…best of luck.

S also got $10K scholarship this year: OOS (MA) 2050 SAT, 4.4 W, (didn’t make top 10 percent). It makes the school a lot more attractive for us.

When did you all hear about merit aid? We are OOS and we did not apply for financial aid Although there is no need based aid, we are still hopeful for merit aid.

JMD1964, if you are waiting to hear about merit aid for this fall, I highly doubt you will get any at this point. If you are applying for fall 2014 admissions, if you apply by December 1st, you will be automatically considered for any merit scholarships. General guidelines for receiving them are listed here: <a href=“Office of Student Financial Aid | Clemson University”>Office of Student Financial Aid | Clemson University;
