How many ppl out of state actually get into Berkeley? I know the oos acceptance is really low, but anyone know the exact %?

admissions.berkeley.edu

about 25% if I recall correctly. however, it is much lower if you are applying for an engineering major.

what about a forestry major out of state??

IIRC, the OOS acceptance rate is in the high teens.

I read somewhere on this board (a long time ago) that a kid was accepted to Harvard but not Berkely OOS =(

the 25% admission rate is for instate residence. as a UC school, Berkeley has the obligation to give consideration to Cali students first. i think they do reserve some spots for out of state ppl tho...the acceptance rate i heard (no official website) was 4% for OOS. now that i think about, i probably didn't need to post that question. i applied already so the best i can do is wait and hope:b

Ok I looked it up.

Fall 2006 Non Residents Data:
4,446 applied
899 admitted (20%)
236 enrolled

if you chose to visit the website i posted, you would have found this, and not 4%! :)

As an added note, in 2005, 7% of the freshman student body was OOS.

for out of staters, please don't refer to my state as "Cali" it's NorCal, SoCal, California, or CA....only dr. dre and pac can legally call CA "Cali" (as the state where the bomb ass hemp be, the place where you never find the dance floor empty....cali is where they lay their mac down). Just cause everybody erks when midwesterners call california cali....its just...not natural....it's like caling illinois (sp?) illi...so not cool.

yea... i used to live in socal and we just called our state California...then i moved to east coast and everyone there calls it "Cali"....

I live in Illinois, and although I don't say Cali, I hear a lot of people call it that.

The only thing worse than hearing "Cali", is when I hear people pronounce the "s" at the end of Illinois. It's silent, seriously.

Way to steer off-topic. For the record, you don't own the state of California, and residents of the other 49 states also have a right to free speech and can call California whatever the heck they want.

Anyway, the past few years it's been about 21%. I guess this year it's 20%, compared to 23.6% overall (which would probably mean around 25% for instate). The percentages are actually pretty close but there's also a bit of self-selection going on meaning OOS applicants tend to have somewhat better stats on average. Yes I have heard of accounts of applicants applying OOS to Berkeley and rejected while accepted at a place like Stanford or an Ivy. I don't think these cases are common but they happen.

dood....chillll it was light hearted banter. have a good weekend

okay, glad to hear it's more than 4% XD i don't see the problem of calling California Cali...it's whatever works. if it bothers you, sorry:p

I thought I read somewhere that Spring Admission is only for in-staters. Is this true?

Sakuragirl: One thing about us native Californian's...we are really accepting about whatever people want to call our state. Most of us actually don't recognize there's actually life outide of California anyway, so we don't pay attention to what OOS'ers are sayning...:)
On a more serious note, I never heard the term, "Nor Cal," or "So Cal"until I came to Cal, and I still haven't figured out what that's all about...
Good luck on your admissions, if you decide on Cal just please don't say "hella!!" :)

Er, I've been raised in California, and it's very common to hear "Cali" here. =)
