Out-State Financial Aid and Admissions at Berkeley

Hello, I have two questions:

 1. I’m very interested in Berkeley, but I’ve heard their financial aid for out-staters is AWFUL. To what extent is that true? Because, honestly, that’s be the only reason I won’t be apply.

I’ve heard conflicting reports on Berkeley’s admission rate for out-staters. (I’m from Minnesota, BTW.) So, is the admissions rate for out-state higher or lower than Cali residents?

Thank you so much! I would love to do environmental engineering at Berkeley.

Admission rates for OOS is considerably lower than california reidents and even lower in the college of engineering.

If OoS financial aid is a concern, you do not want to apply to Berkeley. OoSers have to pay OoS tuition. There is no "financial aid" for OoS tuition. In addition, most in-staters pay part of the "fees" with Cal Grants which you, as an OoSer, will not receive.

Honestly, Berkeley is not really a great choice for someone who does not get California prices. Practically any other school will be cheaper and even the comparable private school options -- including the Ivies -- will give you better aid despite the seeming price difference.

"Admission rates for OOS is considerably lower than california reidents and even lower in the college of engineering."

The admit rate for OOS for Fall 2008 was 17.2% and 23.6% for Cali residents. Of course, self-selection may be more effective among out-of-state applicants, but I'd say the difficulty of admission to Berkeley from out-of-state is definitely overstated.

Note, OOS did not include internationals. The international admit rate was 22.7%.

I'm out-of-state and I got a good amount of financial aid. However, much of it is need-based. So, you might as well apply and see what type of aid they give you.

I would apply, see what happens. Worst case you don't go because you can't afford it. There are some merit scholarships you could possibly get, etc. The application is relatively painless.

Thanks for all the advice! I THINK I will apply just 'cause... Hope everything will work out.
