I’m a junior in high school right now and I was wondering what my chances are of getting into University Wisconsin Madison or Duke University.
For my grades, i usually get B’s and A’s. More on the B side though… Think my gpa is around 3.0. I have taken AP Calc 1 this year and am taking 5 AP’s next year. Not sure how colleges calcultate gpa and such. For my psat, i got a 220 and qualified for national merit. on sat, i havnt taken yet, probably round the same as psat. I am in key club, ultimate frisbee, and band in my school right now. I just moved to wisconsin lately but at my old school, i was in quiz bowl, played football and started a chinese club. i also play the piano, drums, and guitar. i have over 100 hours of volunteer at a hospital. hoping to take some sat II’s soon. can someone tell me my chances of gettin into those 2 schools?

Also, i have a question about GPA. I just asked my school and they me a GPA of 2.9 :( but, for all my classes, i have never gotten below a 85 on my report card except for spanish. My old school was a hardcore acedemic school so the classes were harder and i got around 85-89's. that was for 5 semesters. But the one semester here in wisconsin, i have gotten all around 93-98. so i was wondering, do colleges look at the GPA the school has sent them or do they calculate it. Also, would being in honors and phase 5 classes help my GPA? also AP's. I'm hoping i can get mine to a 3.0 or above... any help is appreciated

a 2.9 uw corresponds to less than a B average. So unless you really screwed up spanish, its wrong and colleges will understand

i got mostly C's in spanish. i think my new school has a thing where a 85 is like 2.7... so im ok? they wont send school gpa? and my chances at the two colleges?

I'm sorry, but unless you've got some really outstanding parts to your application, I don't think your grades are what Duke is looking for. I'm not sure about Wisconsin, but you are in-state so you probably have a better shot.

You also are not giving yourself much time to take the SAT and SAT2s - the next ones aren't offered until October.

I suggest you also get a good understanding of your GPA and rank. Then look at several colleges and develop a list of safeties, matches, and reaches. Good luck!

u know the chances of getting into madison?

With a 3.0, very low. The average GPA is around a 3.7. I don't even know if you're technically an in state applicant yet.

when i apply, ill be in wisconsin for a year or more. and im guessing my GPA is around 3.5 after looking at th Princeton Review GPA Scale. Took out my old report cards and calculated. thats with the unweighted. weighted, im around 3.6. so, is that enough?

That's more competitive. There isnt a magical number that would get you in. What will your rank be? Your standardized test scores will be fine if your PSAT is that high

At my new school, I'm around the top 10%. Not really sure though. Almost all my classes are with seniors... Will the school tell u rank? and how is it determined. i dont think its gpa cause one who takes hard classes can have a lower gpa then one who takes the easiest. so how will that go about?

Sounds like you really need to talk to your school counselor. Some schools produce a student handbook, which usually describe GPA calculation.
