I'm trying to decide between two universities, one with a great engineering name and a higher ranking for overall engineering and for the particular major..GaTech
and the other also known for engineering and its rigorous academic programs...but a lower ranking for engineering and the particular major...CMU

but the latter has a much better overall ranking...and maybe is a more well-known/prestigious and well-rounded university
putting atmosphere and fun aside, how would a more well-rounded university benefit me for my engineering job. Graduating from CMU, will I get a much better engineering job or...nothing like that

I goto UIUC for CS, and none of my peers had trouble getting jobs from companies like Google, MS, VMWare, Oracle, etc. I think GaTech and CMU would be similar.

They're both well-known as good programs. When we're looking at hiring people, we just kind of glance over the name and decide to ourselves whether the program is worth its salt. Both CMU and GT are, almost universally. Beyond that, whether we make an offer comes down to the attributes of the candidate that we're considering.

So no, I really don't think it'd make a difference between the two. I'd mostly just figure out which university will make you happiest (and thusly, more receptive to the education you're about to receive... and also, if you have a positive outlook on things and are a team player and all that jazz, we're more likely to hire you, too).

ya true...yucca I am doing ME so I am most probably going to gatech...in fact i like the option of doing a minor in Aerospace
isn't it true that CMU is much more expensive because its a private and and it does provide better services to the students but it doesn't mean that its high tuition is a a price of prestige and reputation right....

Trying to decide between UT Austin (EE) and CMU(ECE). Both are OOS for me. The difference in costs is about 5-7k in favor of UT Austin. Request help from the team here on the following:-

(a). Reputation.. which is better from recruitment?
(b). I am also interested in double-majoring in business.. I heard one does not need a separate transfer to Tepper(CMU), compared to McCombs(UT Austin).

"Difference in cost" is kinda vague. I mean, if you're paying $30k/year for Austin and 35k/year for CMU, neither is really that great of a deal.

actually cmu is 54k...i never thought it was worth that much...there may be better services and personal attention but nothing that's gonna matter in the long run

it'd be tough, why dont you do engineering, then get an mba. i guess you could do it with your ap credits, but do you really want to do that to yourself. getting an mba after a few years of work experience would be much better.

I am an undergrad junior transfer student and have been admitted into UIUC, U of michigan ann arrbor, and UT Austin. I am not able to decide as where to opt for. I am in comp science. So which will be the better option keeping all the things in mind?

I have been accepted to:
Asu
SU
U Mass
All for Engineering. I know what the rankings say…but I am looking for some actual opinion.
I live on the east cost so ASU is a haul. The engineering dept. is suppose to be good, but the rest of the school is suppose to be a party.

Many people tell me Syracuse is a good school, but I think that is for Newhouse Communications. In fact I posted a thread on Syracuse link, asking about the Engineering Dept. and no one even responded. But my parents say that this school is a good school, although it is 52 a year…?

About U mass I have gotten mixed reviews. But for 20 less a year it might be worth it?

Any feedback here?

I had good SAT’s but messed up in Freshman year so my GPA isn’t what it needed to be to get into VT and schools like that, although I am considering transfering later.

if cost were same, CMU would have the edge, just my preference though, if cost were different then there is no contest GaTech. But just go where you think you’ll be happy, their both top schools.
