I'm planning on attending one of Vandy's PreVU days soon. Do many people find Vanderbilt students to host them for the night or is that completely on an individual basis? If the latter, whom do I contact? Also, would it matter if I chose the night before or after?

Thanks in advance! I'm completely excited about visiting Vandy. Nashville seems soooo amazing. Any additional tips on visiting the school or must-see places in Nashville are very much appreciated!

I just did a quick search of the Vandy website and couldn't find overnight visiting info. It used to be available online, so maybe something has changed? Anyway, my d frequently hosted hs seniors during her first 2 years at Vandy. The arrangements were always made through admissions (or, for accepted College Scholars, the Dean's office). I'm sure they can give you all the info you need. Vandy students take a lot of care in showing their school to prospective students, and I'm sure you'd enjoy an overnight.

Last year I inquired about overnight visits, in March. I was told they only did those in the fall. Perhaps they don't do them anymore at all? Maybe they are on hold until the new freshman dorms open? I would suggest calling the Admissions office right away.

Frankly, I was a little surprised to hear they weren't offering an overnight stay to my son, given that he had just received an offer of a full tuition scholarship. It sort of put me off, but fortunately, we visited anyway and son liked what he saw.

I think you're right, midmo - they aren't offering overnight visits any longer :( . I mentioned this to my daughter and she said that instead they've instituted a day-long program in which prospective students shadow a current student (maybe freshmen only?) and go to all their classes, activities, lunch, etc. My d wasn't sure why the policy was changed but wondered if the pending new dorms/residential college experience were part of the reason.

Thanks for all your help! I'll be sure to call soon because while I think campus visits are crucial, overnight visits REALLY give you a full perspective. I'm thinking that you guys are right, though. :-(

When I asked about overnight visits, I got an email that contained information about 'Dore for a Day (the program mentioned in the previous post) It's only for accepted seniors I believe. I'll double-check but it's in April.

Yes, that is correct that Dore-for-a-Day has replaced the overnight hosting program. I used to host prospective students overnight, and from what I heard, the program had really vast results totally depending on the likeness between the host and prospective. Also, scheduling makes it difficult to present a clear picture of Vandy for a student host. For example, if a student came to visit on a Wednesday night, there is certainly a different take on campus and Nashville on a Wed night as opposed to a Friday or Saturday night. In addition, it's hard to gauge what kind of kid the prospective will be - will they want to go out to a frat? to a club? stay in and watch a movie? go to dinner?

so yeah, i think based on the mixed reviews of the program, they opted to do dore for a day because it's a more controlled atmosphere and the prospective student can still see a lot of campus. in addition, many of the prospective students know current vandy students, so of course, they could always stay with them.

I have to add that our son did an overnight through the admissions office in 05, and received vastly more personal treatment than he did at other colleges. He has a fantastic student host who made a point of introducing him to several dorm mates, took him to see his club sports interests and made sure a friend had lunch with him, plus ran him by the admissions office for a quick hello. Vandy hands out course lists to visitors where profs are OK about prospective sit-ins but it helps to shoot an email to a prof to let them know you are coming and to send an email (short) thanking them for speaking to you. Anyway, Vandy did a bang up job with prospective visits in our view. Students there are really friendly and full profs are approachable.
