Overnight Stay Program

yah i had a good time also, but the drawback where that we didn't get to meet our host till like midnite. If we had been able 2 hang out with our host from like the afternoon, or possibly shadow them most of the day, it would have been a lot more fun, especially berkeley on a friday nite. Instead of feeling like tourists, we woulda felt like students. but other than that it was pretty good, i still love cal, and can't wait 2 start in august!!

I had a really good time. The panels, classes I attended and all of the new freshmen I met, plus the food and social activities were great too. 4 of us were picked up by a freshman and taken to Clark Kerr which was really nice but our host had an 8AM class so he pawned us off on his room mate and went to sleep right after he picked us up. There was no where for us to sleep so we slept in the lobby at Clark Kerr, no fun. But I still had a really great weekend and am glad I sent my SIR in and decisions are over. I don't think my host wanted us either! He was telling us about the 'geeks' he hosted on Friday night and how there were so many parties and the geeks didn't want to party with them.

Shame shame... the hosts aren't suppose to bring the prospective students to parties! ;)

The host thing was our hugest problem; we tried matching first session and ended up with long waits like punkdudeus experienced, and then second session, we just paired first come first serve but then a lot of kids got mad we weren't using the host surveys

yeah i heard from a good number of people that their hosts weren't exactly friendly or welcoming. i was lucky though because my host was quite nice and told me a lot of valuable information.

That's a bust. My host was really great and supportive. He asked me what I wanted to do. He was a spring admit, like me, and had tons of good info. After a long day on campus and the hike up to the big C, I was beat. The Overnight Program really helped me make up my decision.

CAL 2010- Go BEARS!

See, the problem quadrupled in size this year; each year, the limiting factor for the number of students we can take is the number of hosts. This year we essentially required all freshmen Alumni Scholars to host; hence, some of them weren't necessarily eager to do so. It's a no-win situation, b/c if we don't have that requirement, we'll have fewer spots (and sign up already went so quickly this time!); if we do have the requirement, there will be inevitably some not great hosts and some management issues

Any other feedback would be great; we're already starting to talk about next yr's OSP.

Sorry, didn't mean to get any hosts into any trouble with the partying remark. knowing now that we were "foced on the hosts makes a lot more sense with why they were not so friendly and didn't want to do it. I guess I am glad I didn't know that yesterday or I would have probably would have gone home and not participated in the program.

OSP was a great experience for me. My host was extremely nice and was very helpful and accomodating. Overall it was a fantastic trip and really made me fall in love with Cal (although I still can't decide between Cal and UCLA =X).

P.S. If William Denq (from OSP Fri+Sat) happens to read this... I think you're really cute :)

Hm I had no idea they forced some to host this year. That's definitely not a good thing!

Hmm, I think you could find some people outside of Alumni scholars who would host, and would want to more than whatever numbers of forced Alumni scholars didn't want to(although they should be more greatly seeing that they get 5k and a bunch of perks.)

I agree with punkdudeus..I think it is WAY better if prospective students meet their hosts earlier, instead of at 12 when we're all dead tired and wanting to sleep and really not wanting to communicate. So definitely, in terms of next year, students should meet hosts earlier.

I liked my host a lot. We were really annoyed because we were waiting for just one girl to dorm with us at Clark Kerr. We waited for a long time amidst the chaos and then just decided to leave without her. I could tell she was really annoyed but other than that, she was awesome. I definitely would not have envisioned to host with her because I was all the while thinking of the survey but she was chill and even asked us if we wanted to attend a frat party.

We said no, don't worry.

Anyway maybe that's the only thing that needs improving. And maybe better icebreakers haha.

osp was fantastic! my host was awesome... we hung out at crossroads with a bunch of friends from his floor until 1-ish and they were all really friendly. i met a bunch of really cool prospective students and was suprised by how many out of staters there were (i'm from texas myself). i was originally torn between UCLA and berkeley (i am originally from southern california, but i've wanted to go to cal for a long time). OSP made me remember why cal had always been my dream school, and i am now almost 100% sure that i will be part of the class of 2010. i had actually flown in from WashU's overnight stay program that morning, and even though WashU's program was more organized, i found the cal experience to be much more fun. my host was telling me that our session ran much more smoothly than the first one though. hiking up to the big C and bashing stanford is something i won't forget for a long time. go bears!
