Overnight Visit @ Rice in Jan/Feb

I just got word of it via e-mail. Does anyone know if this is an annual thing? I've heard of Owl Days etc, but not really this.

Should I attend? I've already submitted my Rice app and I feel like showing a bit of interest couldn't hurt, but i'm not sure whether or not it'd be too late for me to visit. I do suppose I could talk to an admissions officer during my time there however. Also, does anyone know if they offer travel assistance to low income applicants?

I second this post.

I believe they won’t offer any travel assistance if you just wanted to do an overnight, but it won’t hurt to email them and ask. There is a fly-in program every fall for seniors and another one in the spring for those who have applied; these offer travel assistance. I believe both are invitation-only and aimed at URMs and low-income students. I’ve also read that if you’re accepted, some people are offered travel assistance to visit, but I’m not sure how they determine who to offer it to.

If Rice is a top choice and you can afford to visit, I think it’s a good idea, because you’ll get a chance to see what the campus is really like and whether you’d actually like to go to school there. There might also be record of the visit on your admissions portal, where you sign up for it, so that they will see it as demonstrated interest, but I’m not sure.

Hope this helps!

Kuleczka pretty much sums it up.
Since you already submitted your application, it is too late to self-state that you actually took a visit to Rice, but if Rice sees it in their records of your visit, it will show interest.

If you’re pressed on money, then it would be a better idea to visit after you are accepted when you finally decide on which college to attend come this fall. However, an overnight is a game changer. I fell in love with Rice as soon as I stepped on campus and decided to apply ED a day later.

Owl days are going to be a better experience giving you 2-3days of being an owl instead of just an overnight one.

Good luck!
