It would be nice to connect with other parents and share insights and experiences. I have a daughter in the class of 2016 and my son was just accepted ED into the class of 2018. Both SEAS
Anyone else?

That is great! Congrats! My son was just accepted ED for the Class of 2018 as well. SEAS too!

Congrats to you too! I’m glad they get to enjoy their senior semester with these early acceptances in hand.
With my older one I found The Daily Pennsylvanian and Penn on twitter, to be very helpful in keeping us informed of news and happenings around campus.
Exciting times ahead :)

Congratulations!

My D is a third year SEAS.

My S got a likely letter and has not visited Penn yet:( He’s waiting for another 9 decisions and come April we’ll visit. We are in FL

Congratulations on some great choices ahead of you. Share if you have any questions, it might help narrow it down.

My S is also SEAS. My question is this, will it be better to plan an overnight visit before April events for admitted students? I know this year they are overhauling that but some people think its best to visit during regular time to get a real feel for the school. What do you think? Do you live in PA?
@ovrseasmon I just read your name…Are you overseas?

Penn is overhauling their accepted students days this year. They plan an overnight event where the accepted students stay with current students on campus. I know my S who is in SEAS has volunteered to host a student. I cannot think of a better way to decide if Penn is the place for your son. Congratulations!

Penn is a big place–10,000 undergrads. My personal opinion is that scheduling an overnight visit that’s NOT during Quaker Days (or whatever they’re calling Penn Previews this year) would be a mistake. The applicant’s experience and exposure would be limited to the personal orbit of the student with whom he/she happened to stay. During Quaker Days, on the other hand, there will be informative events of more general and specific interest to admitted applicants, in addition to the opportunities to stay and visit with individual students. And Penn will be in session during that time, allowing admitted applicants to get a “real feel” for the school.

Just my 2 cents (if it’s worth even that much ;-)).

Agree with 45 Percenter. Four years ago my senior son went to Penn Previews and was sold by a session at CURF (Center for Undergraduate Research & Fellowships) that dealt with his Vagelos MLS program. The funny thing is that since then CURF has been totally useless to him, but that session sealed the deal and would only be available to current prospective students during Quaker Days. I’m sure there are valuable sessions for almost every student but be careful there are also some bad dog and pony shows that you should not hesitate to get up and leave if you are so inclined.

The Penn Preview days were a positive for my Penn freshman as well. For my d, she had plenty of college visits under her belt and had already been to 2 accepted students visits at other schools. Her first and only Penn visit on that April weekend was her last college visit. It was that amazing “this is the school” feeling that she got within a few hours on campus. There was a student panel that she found so informative and my husband really got alot out of the sessions that were planned. And she met a girl she decided to room with! It worked out very well:)

I’m wondering whether it is better to try to find a compatible roommate before applying for housing. The only avenue available for that would probably be the facebook group of accepted students in our case. Or has the random assignment of freshman roommates worked pretty well for everyone?

My S was contacted by Penn and they are sponsoring him to visit Quaker Days!!! Awesome:)) they are covering all the costs

Congratulations!! Thats a pretty sweet deal :)

Overseas mom, room mate selection is not random. Penn has a pretty extensive questionnaire it uses to match incoming freshman. It worked great for my daughter and others on her floor. Her room mate and another pair are getting a four bedroom suite together next year.

Congrats to the Proud Parents of the newly admitted class of 2018 :)

Congrats new Penn Parents. The school does a great job welcoming everyone including the parents. I hope you all enjoy it very much.

My D was accepted and is attending Quaker Days. She is still undecided however, as this was totally unexpected. She LOVES Tufts, and Northwestern is still in the running as well. Thoughts? Political Science/International Relation major with French minor.

WE LOVE PENN!

^ YES WE DO! :)

But to picktails regarding his/her daughter, I say: she can’t go wrong academically with any of these three fantastic choices. My advice is to let her attend Quaker Days, and then choose the school at which she thinks she’d be happiest, and thrive best both academically and socially (taking into account campus life and feel, location, etc.). At this level of academic excellence, it really does come down to personal preference and fit, and she really needs to make that determination for herself.

And congrats to both you and your daughter!
