When is the overnight visit for accepted students? They said on the USD website that they would post admission events soon but none are up yet. I am wondering if it's more of an individual thing or they have one weekend where everyone comes at once? When was it last year for EA students?

Thanks!

There was the College Visiting Day of Sat., Apr. 9 mentioned in the mailing and the website says Spring 2011 events to be posted soon. Does anyone know if most go on this date? And is that date for accepted students only (as it says on other side of card) or if that date is open for anyone interested in the school, like soph/jrs just making college info visits? Also what other types of events come up? For those that are long distance, can probably only visit once more.

Also, do you think it would be useful for just a parent to attend? D out of country and can’t attend.

My son attended the overnighter in April of this last year. It is a terrific event and is strictly for admitted students. He was pared with a current student for the events and slept in that student’s dorm room. The next morning he went with his host to his classes. The event was very well attended…I am guessing for the night we choose there were probably 150 students. (You usually have a couple of different nights to choose from.) I stayed in a local hotel after attending the very informative parent events that first afternoon. When I picked him up the next day USD went from being 3rd on his list to number 1. He just finished his first semester and loves his choice!

I’m really looking forward to it! I went and visited over my Spring Break last year and I loved the campus and the feel and I bet an overnight visit would be awesome. Do you remember when the dates were last year? I’m hoping they have one in Feb. or March, because we have a dif. Spring Break and a long weekend in Feb! Thanks for your help!

lizardrock: So the overnighters are different dates than that Sat. in April since admitted student pairs with current student and goes to classes?

And there are parent events? D so excited about acceptance and really wants me to go in her place but going to class and sleeping in the dorm–not going to happen.

Also any dorm recommendation from S for D? She’s thinking a double, possibly in the Valley.

Midwstmom - I believe we had a choice of 3 different nights to attend. It is a very well run affair. You show up to a reception with your student where they then leave their overnight bag and sleeping bag. You take a campus tour together which was a repeat for us since we did it the summer before but was new to many people there. Then they split you up with parents going into some terrific information meetings that last at the most 2 hours (?). Then you (parent) head off campus for the evening …they do have special arrangements with some very nice hotels within minutes of the campus over at the San Diego Bay so the price was very reasonable. Then your student spends the remainder of the afternoon/evening with their host and doing group activities, sleeps overnight and goes to classes the next morning.
My dorm recommendation is Missions A in the valley…each floor has a living room, outside deck (overlooking Mission Bay), 2 large bathrooms and 4 double bedrooms. The rooms are large!! From our family experience this type of suite arrangement is the best from many areas but most importantly it gives you 7 new friends immediately not just 1 (your roommate). You also have the nice living room area and deck for extra personal space.

Thanks lizardrock, very helpful. I probably will attend one of them, just for more information. We stayed on campus in the upperclassmen apartments this past summer in a two bedroom, two bathroom with LR and kitchen. Very nice. Would be nice to have that LR common space. And I think all those steps from the valley would be a help against the dreaded FFF! (freshman female fifteen)

Do you know if Missions A is hard to get into? Is it a lottery or by the date you enroll and request housing? And is there an early date she should enroll by? Thanks again.

Lizardrock, do you remember which dates were given as options for the overnighter?

Sorry RGHelmcamp. Didn’t mean to take over the focus of your thread. Hope the dialogue has helped you too.

Oh the dialogue has helped a lot! That’s my only remaining question!

Midwstmom - I believe housing is based on two things: 1-when you put in your commitment deposit & 2- your housing request. We put in our commitment deposit as soon as the financial package came which I think came in March. Then in June the student puts in their housing application with their preferences and they are notified in late summer. I think you have a high success rate if you are diligent in getting everything in timely.
RGH - sorry I don’t remember the exact date options but late March - mid April was the date range. You could probably contact the University (email is best) and ask them the dates, I would bet that already have them picked out.

Thanks again, lizardrock. So each Missions A unit is the entire floor? And they will all have a deck on the Bay side, not some overlooking parking or other buildings? Do you have any idea what the Super Single housing is in Missions A? It costs ~$1K more per semester but they also have Singles listed for $600 more. Maybe availability depends on enrollment numbers.

Yes, Missions A units are the entire floor and there are usually 3 floors to each building. I can’t say regarding the Bay side, but I am thinking that most of Missions A face that direction. Have not seen a super single and from what I understand they are very rare.

Thanks again lizardrock. I’ve been getting pretty specific so I appreciate your answers; I think it’s probably time to ask USD some questions in anticipation of enrolling D.

Midwstmom and all on these boards feel free to ask me anything. The help I received last year here was so helpful I promised myself I would come back this year and help the new incoming parents as much as previous parents had helped me. :-)
