Owl Days 2013

Has anyone been contacted about this yet? I can't remember whether or not I got anything about it yet, but now I'm really interested in it.

I think the info will come out after regular decisions are released and maybe even after the accepance deadline. No worries… if you are accepted, the info will come :-). You can also do a search for Owl Days 2013 and see if you get any hits.

@Premed4 did you get in ED? I don’t think they’ve said anything about dates yet but I think they’ll give more information about it in March. I’m trying to decide if I want to go or not. I got in ED and it would be fun to go visit in April but I’m worried that it would be geared more towards RD students who are trying to decide which school to go to. What do you think?

Yea, I got in ED, so I’m still deciding if I’ll go or not. Everyone say’s that it’s so much fun though, and I’d miss school, and I’m really excited to meet some people before school starts. If my parents let me go, then I think I’ll go.

Also, I was just looking at a thread from 2011 that talks about how Owl Days starts pretty early in the morning, and students coming from far away, and without a parent have the option to stay overnight in the dorm for an extra night. Does anyone know if this is still an option?

Thanks

IMO, if you have been admitted ED or have already visited the campus you don’t really need to come to Owl Days. Owl Days is great for students who are out of state and have never been to campus so that they can come and see what they have gotten themselves into (a good thing!) after they get admitted and maybe were not 100% certain to commit to Rice.

I also recommend parents not come unless they have the money to spend on the travel cost and just want to see the campus for the first time. Parents will get to see the campus when they drop you off during Owl Week in August. Save the travel money from the parent and use it to buy your Supper Shuttle (or taxi fees) from the airport for the student as that is about the only concern I would have on your first trip to Rice.

Also be ready to book your airline flight just as soon as you get the invitation to Owl Days if you plan on coming. From past experience if you wait a few days the air fares will have gone up since there isn’t much or a time window after you get the acceptance notice. This will save you and Rice money so if you think you are coming be ready to book that airfare like the next day for the available advanced discounts that will disappear quickly.

You can search the threads for information about the two airports but Hobby is better if Southwest Airlines is an option from your departure city. Most students can fly into Hobby on the first flight of the morning on Owl Days and get to Rice in time so you do not need to come in the night before. However, you may want to use a taxi so there will be no added 15-25 minute delays of getting from the airport to campus that you will experience with the Shuttle. Taxi service will only be about $7-10 more from Hobby anyway so it may be worth it to save time that morning. (Taxi service from IAH will be more than that)

I think at the moment I’m leaning towards not going… It’s a long distance, especially since I’m committed.
