Owl Days question

I decided to start a new thread, so my question would not get buried in the other RD discussion thread.

I have seen that some have posted there that travel fees for Owl Days are covered. Do your e-mails specifically say this? Ours does say that they require travel information, but it doesn't seem to say that is paid for??? Are all admitted students invited to Owl Days, but only some have their travel costs included? Or is that offer implied in the line about needing travel information?

Sorry to be so confused!

This was similar to a scholarship day at UMich that my daughter was invited to. When she signed up, they asked for her travel arrangements (i.e. flight number and day). They provided transportation from the airport to campus and back again. But we paid for airfare.

It seems this is different from the email that some are getting from Rice (which we did not). They are apparently paying for the cost of transportation. I assume this would include airfare and transportation to and from campus.

Again, not sure, this is just my speculation.

Sorry to hijack your thread for a second, but I’ll continue the trend of asking questions about admitted student days.

I am probably going to send in my enrollment deposit in the next few days. I have not visited campus yet, but have registered for the Admitted Student Day on April 17. Is it weird for someone who has already enrolled to attend one of those days? Thanks!

why do you want to pay the enrollment fee before visiting. What is the tearing hurry to do that? Why not visit and then pay the deposit?

@CUPKSDAD That makes more sense. I realize that. But I’m just anxious to have it official; it’s been my dream school for so long. Even if I happen to hate it on campus, I don’t believe it’s a hassle to un-enroll. So you think it is wiser to wait?

Now - nobody will know or care that you visit after paying the deposit. So it is not an issue from that front. However, nobody is going to take away your admission either. my suggestion is wait, visit - you have 3 weeks after that to pay your deposit

@Hoggirl I think only certain students’ travel expenses are covered. You should have received a separate e-mail indicating that they want to pay for your trip if you had that option.

@tropicalslushies I went to Owl Days after enrolling last year. It doesn’t matter at all. You’re going to have the same exact experience either way.

It seems like merit scholarship recipients are offered the travel reimbursement. Does anyone who attended it in the past mind sharing what the “student-led activities” are during Owl Days? I’m wondering if I can attend a club meeting I’m interested in on one of the evenings.

@christino My ds was offered a merit scholarship, but we were not offered travel reimbursement. I can’t answer your question, however. I would call and ask them!

@hoggirl, the travel reimbursement is being offered to a limited number of admitted students and provides for reimbursement of air transportation costs. It is stated on a separate e-mail and not on the invitation.

A friend of mine got that email stating that rice would cover up to 1500 usd for the air ticket. We are argentinean, so maybe thats why. He wouldnt be ablo to visit the campus if he hadnt got the email. But maybe its just random… I dont know

I got an email stating that Rice will cover only the airline fare up to USD1500…
I don’t think that’s an option for me considering where I am currently.

I am a Rice alum, and I highly recommend attending Owl Days if at all possible. If you have not enrolled yet, Owl Days will give you a great feel for life at Rice and the students who might be your classmates. If you have already enrolled, you will meet people who will become good friends during your time at Rice.

I’ve never visited Rice and am pretty sure I want to go there from all the information I have gathered. I cannot go to Owl Days or Admitted Students Days. Is it advisable to visit separately on another day - probably the 18th (the day after an admitted students day…i know)???

@FLstudent2014 The advantage of Owl Days is all of the events planned for the students. However, there is still a lot of value to visiting here on a normal day, and you will get to meet real students and ask plenty of questions about their lives at Rice. If money is no object then I suggest still visiting.

@tropicalslushies If you really want to submit now then that’s fine! I highly doubt your experience at Owl Days will be poor. Furthermore, you will still get a ton of value from Owl Days. You will get to become very familiar with many aspects of the campus and student life.
