Im in the process of applying to schools, writing essays, ect. I was wondering if their were any benefits to using either paper or online.

Here are my thoughts

Postives to online:
Im applying to many top schools, 7 of which use common app, easily done through online.
Neater
Less chances of losing

Positives to paper:
Online apps cut off my essay at exactly 500 words. It is stuck around 600, and its staying there.
I can exapnd upon my extracurrics by including a resume.

Are these correct? What should I do... do schools truly like online submission better?

Im glad you posted this as I havent thought much about it. It seems that paper is best if you send it well ahead of time. Anyone have any insights?

i'm doing paper....because once u summit in internet, u cannot corret it
but in paper, u can show it to somebody to look at it.....
and by the way....for resume for ecs,,, how do u do it? is there a some kind of form to do it? or just list all things u have done

Im having trouble with this too: I was thinking about submitting the common application online because it is just SO messy and disorganized. I really want to attach a nice resume and everything.

But at the same time, I'm not sure I want to send it through the mail because I'm scared I'll forget something, or if it will get lost in the mail. I had a bad experience a couple years ago applying to the columbia summer program where I sent in my whole application and they lost it, and I had to re-send everything really fast to meet the deadline. It was really annoying, so Im thinking I'll just do it online for quickness and security. Sigh.

i like paper. some colleges have timers on the essay, so that you have to copy the topic and spend time on it on Word and also many of the online application instructions are ambiguous.

most colleges want you to submit the online application. you can submit a hard copy of your essay along with your letters of rec. and transcripts that your counselor sends.. that avoids being cut off at 500 words. it is much easier to make mistakes with the online application (i accidently put United Kingdom instead of United States in the drop-down menu for place of birth on one of my applications). i'd do what the colleges like more with the application and then just send a hard copy of your essay.

The formatting for the common app online is pathetic compared to the formats for most of the colleges' own applications. For common app I'm just doing it on paper (I do like the way you can type the info into the pdf) and for most of the colleges that don't use the common app, I'm doing it online.

I agree with the others. One of my paper applications, says "we prefer you submit your application on line". An honestly, I prefer that they admit me, so I will do what they wish and hopefully they will do what I wish. :)

I am having my g.c. send my resume with the secondary school report, along with my photo.

Plus sending your application on line shows that you are computer savvy (at least to a degree) and that you can follow their suggestions.

If colleges state they don't care what method you use; then submit your application however you feel.

If it were up to me, I'd admit you based on that statement alone.! :)

Thanks, me too!

The photo thing...oh that is something I picked up on another thread from the article in the New Yorker. It basically said that competitive colleges want attractive looking people on their campus. Not that they would accept or reject based on someone's appearance alone of course; but according to the article, it was (or maybe still is) taken into consideration. I am just telling you what I read. Not that I agree with it. But if looks could help - I am sending my photo!

mutual understanding, eh? i think along that line too. so if i see a "strongly recommended" phrase, i'll take that path.
