First-time parents of college students (and others) should definitely check out the Parent Cafe section of CC. Once my son was decided on an MT school, then I had lots of general questions about college...what did he REALLY need to pack, where are the best deals, how many days should I plan for move-in, etc.

I transitioned to a group of other folks from his "grade" who were also sending kids to college. That forum is still going strong (Parents of the Class of 2014 and Beyond). These guys and gals shared sooo much great info - and were such a great support group. they were going through all my same emotions, and so were glad to "listen" and comiserate after I wore all of my other friends out! (HA) Once we all got over the packing lists and the "weepy" stage...we continued to share stories and advice in all aspects of life.

I haven't been there as much in the last couple of years...but I may have to rejoin...time is coming for senior year things and graduation next year...that will bring lots of new questions and the need for a great support group!

I didn't check, but I bet there is already a thread started for the Class of 2017.

I went over to look at that thread for the class of 2017 and am a bit overwhelmed that the one I read was started in 2009 and had over 200 pages to it! I am wondering if we should start a “parent cafe” here on the MT pages, for our little subset of parents.

“Parent cafe” type threads shouldn’t be started here in a substantive forum. However, we’d have no objection should you wish to start a thread for MT parents in the Parent Cafe for your “little subset.”

Yes, now I do remember that the 2017 thread in the Parent Cafe was started at about the same time as the 2014 thread…I think there were “energetic” parents who had kids in both classes, and started theirs WAY early. It can be overwhelming, but on the other had so was the MT forum until you got started, right? There are some very experienced parents in that forum also.

LOVE the idea of starting an MT thread in the Parent Cafe, tho. There are some questions I asked in the “2014” Parents thread that people didn’t really have an answer for since they were specific to MT majors. Either way, you will find good support from other parents.

p.s. I got one of my favoite cookie recipes from that thread…it’s not all about college! That is why it seems overwhelming. Some of those folks “know” each other…but they wouldn’t be on that thread if they weren’t ready to help other folks, too. Jump on in the “pool!”

Do you think it would be too unwieldy if the new thread in the parent cefe also included drama as well as and tech/design? We’re really in the same family and there’s so much overlap among the groups. And, the designers have to forage about and shuttle between you two incredibly lively groups because there aren’t enough of us. (I think the dancers are experiencing the same diaspora). Would a performing arts parents thread be viable? Please forgive me for hijacking a bit- just couldn’t let this golden opportunity slip past:-)

^^I’m not a 2017’er and I have no vote, but lightningmom is right about it being one big family both in theory and in practice. My non-vote would be the more the merrier!
