My S started the UMD app weeks ago and (of course) hasn't gotten back to it yet. He plans on finishing today before the Nov. 1 deadline. So yesterday, I got an email from UMD reminding me, as the parent, to basically keep him on track and reiterating the Nov. 1 deadline.

I thought it was kind of funny - almost feel like I got a little slap on the wrist...

I totally understand why they did this. It’s not so much that I can have much effect on my teenager by nagging her, but more that applying to Maryland by the November 1 priority deadline is so unbelievably important.

If you don’t get that application in by Nov. 1, you’re ineligible for the Honors College, for College Park Scholars or for merit aid. In addition, they’re going to give away a whole lot of spaces in the entering class to people who meet that priority deadline.

So true about the Nov. 1 deadline - hard to believe some kids wait until the Jan deadline. I have to imagine they are either mis-informed or bigger procrastinators than normal. S hit "submit’ yesterday - a whole 3 days before the deadline! There is light at the end of the application tunnel - only 4 more to go…

Since I was the one who was going to be footing the bill, keeping my kid on track to retain eligibility for merit scholarships did not seem trivial or helicopter-y to me! I would have appreciated an email like that if I had not been aware of the importance of the priority deadline.
