Do you think all parents should have received a request to send a letter of recommendation for their son or daughter by now? I never received the request, though I see in the letter (as printed in the New York Times Education Section) that the college president says that all parents will have the opportunity to send a letter. Not receiving this request is making me concerned for my child's admission chances.

Just call them. I’m sure it was just some type of glitch. They said that they were giving all parents this chance. I’m sure they wouldn’t say that if they didn’t mean it. The letter is not due into their office until Mar. 1 (I think).

The above is good advice.

My parents never received the request nor were aware of the option. I’m now enjoying my sophomore year on the Richmond campus so it must not have hurt my chances! :)

Thanks for the advice. I will send one anyway, in case it makes a difference. My daughter was deferred and Richmond is by far her first choice school, so when I did not get the letter (after reading the one in the Times saying that everyone would have the opportunity) it made me concerned that she is no longer really under consideration.

I had dinner with someone at my daughter’s boarding school over the weekend, and they had not gotten this letter either. It came to me by email, and I am just thinking that if the applicant did not enter the parent’s email address on the application, they may not have gotten it. It was from Ed Ayers, who seems to be an amazing President. I was so impressed that in our overall college application process, which generally seemed to completely stiff-arm the parents, he would solicit a letter from a mother or father about their child. It is refreshing, and even a bit old school. I forwarded the letter to my friend, and I am sure U of R would be glad to hear from any parent of an applicant.

I just wanted to throw out my $0.02 on Dr. Ayers. Absolutely amazing guy. He’s one of the top in his field and helps get UR’s name out there through his scholarly work. He teaches one freshman class a year, so that he can continue to have his finger on the pulse of the students. Leads cheers at basketball games and DJ’ed his own party. The guy has all the Southern charm you would hope to find in a man from the hills of TN, has the academic credentials from Yale. Absolutely genuine person who has done some great work at the University and hoping that he will continue to do so for a long time to come.

Just curious – did anyone receive confirmation – or ask for same – that the parent letter was received?

I received auto-generated e-mail confirming receipt immediately after submittal. Additionally, the date of receipt is listed on the web page that lists all documents received in support of the application.
