Parent Plus not go through?

Hey all! My dad is not fluent with English so I'll be posting on his behalf.

I received a good amount of financial aid this year and I need this Parent Plus Loan. I went through the whole process back around June, but it hasn't come through when I took a look at my bill. Last year, I had a co-signer rather than a parent sign for the loan and in June my father had signed it. Did it not go through because I didn't have my co-signer sign it? Can someone walk me down the whole PLUS application steps in my situation?

Here are the steps for completing Parent PLUS application:

Check with your school on how exactly to apply for a Parent PLUS loan, it will one of four slightly different ways.

1.) You fill out a paper application with the school itself.
2.) You fill out application online on your schools website.
3.) They direct you to Studentloans.gov to complete Parent PLUS application.
4.) They direct you to Studentloans.gov to complete Parent PLUS Master Promissory Note and they will use that as an application.

(If you are directed to Studentloans.gov for anything involving Parent PLUS application or Master Promissory Note, make sure your father is the one logging into Studentloans.gov)

If you have already completed one of those steps you can contact Direct Loan Applicant Services at 1-800-557-7394 and they will be able to tell you if you have completed an application and if your father has been approved or denied.

I’m confused.

Are you saying that you used a private loan last year with a co-signer, but this year you are trying to get a Plus loan with your dad’s info and signature?

Non-parents can’t sign Plus loans, so that isn’t the reason why it hasn’t gone thru.

Is it possible that your dad won’t qualify? Is his income high enough to qualify?

Just curious. How much are you borrowing each year?

I’m confused. A PLUS loan does not have a cosigner does it?

I think this is the situation…

Year 1…student got a relative to co-sign a private loan

Year 2…student had parent apply for a Plus Loan, but doesn’t know if it was approved.

Student worries that the problem is that the dad signed for the Plus loan instead of the previous relative. That isn’t the problem. A non-parent wouldn’t have been able to sign a Plus loan.

There is no income criteria for a Parent PLUS loan, only credit criteria and his dad would only need a cosigner if he was denied based on that credit criteria. It sounds like last year he may have gotten a private student loan in the students name with a cosigner
