Parents at Orientation

My mother would like to come up to orientation with me in July, but she isn't too fond of the idea of staying in a dorm. She'd like to stay in a hotel in the area, and she'll pay ala carte for her meals on campus so she won't have to buy the plan. In this case, where she'd only like to come as a formality and whatever, do I have to register her? Or can she just show up and pick and choose what she wants to attend? Basically, do I have to pay the 60 bucks for her to go if she doesn't want to eat or sleep on campus?

Yes you would have to pay the fee if you want her to attend certain programs designed for parents. The $60 is the fee to attend these programs and does not include housing or meal plans for parents. It’s $45/$50 for housing for relatives plus $40 for meals. However, there are hotels and motels around the university where relatives can stay. Learned this from a student ambassador.

The parents stayed in Mohawk when I had orientation, so its not so horrible, but my dad also did the hotel thing. He did pay for the meals, but honestly it’s not worth doing. Your mom can get cheaper off campus.
