I just have a few questions about orientation.

my parents will not be able to make it to orientation, and I know that they will not be allowed to be with me throughout the day, I was just wondering if they will be missing out on something important. I did not apply for financial aid, (and a friend did tell me that a part of orientation for family members does address financial aid) and i was wondering if there is anything else important for my parents to know about.

i was also wondering, since my parents will not be with me, do i have to pay for anything the day of orientation? anything regarding to health insurance, or tuition fees?

as for the second part of orientation, (part II), is sleeping at stony brook mandatory?
i will be commuting, and the orientation is three days, so i was wondering if i have to make any arrangements for that as well.

Your parents won’t miss out on anything if they don’t attend orientation. A lot of the information given to them is on auxiliary services at Stony Brook, such as the CPO (Center for Protection and Outreach), Student Health Services, tutoring, school health insurance and financial aid. It’s a lot of useless information. My parents actually left halfway through it because they were bored.

You don’t pay for anything at orientation. To make a payment for your student bill, use SOLAR pay online or visit the bursar. Your student account needs to be paid in full, be on a time payment option or be covered by pending financial aid by sometime at the end of August or the beginning of September.

If you commute to Stony Brook, orientation part II only takes place on two days and you have to commute both days. There isn’t an on campus option for housing during orientation part II.

They still do, but you have to pay it prior to attending orientation so it shouldn’t be a problem. It’s one of the deposits that you have to pay, but they make a point of not charging it to your student bill. I had a problem with it as an incoming freshman and it was this entire drawn out process because I had it deferred until my financial aid came through before I paid it. They refused to bill it to my account, so they kept the Orientation Hold on my SOLAR account until I paid it. The only reason that I was able to register for fall classes was because they removed the hold for the day. They put it back on and I couldn’t register for spring classes until I paid for it.

They do charge your SOLAR account for opening weekend meals though, which needs to be paid at the same time as tuition in late August/early September.
