Parents & College

Just wondering, what are your parents' feelings about this? especially students going through the application and choosing process right now.

My parents are completely against me going to universities that are far away(which happens to be where all of my picks are), they want me to go to local ones (which SUCK for engineering), which I REALLY dont want to go to. Theyre okay with me going anywhere if its grad school because I will be more "wise" by then. since when did being "wise" have a timed start? Im 16 and I havent had a single drop of alcohol, and in abstinence from the "activities" :D which sounds horrible, but I have less things to think about right now really, and just focus on school

lol. Local colleges? I doubt yours are as local as my mother wants me. My town has six colleges. Two four year universities (that I could walk to), One four year university (that’s about 10-15 minutes away), two two-years, and one chiropractic school.

My mother would LOVE it if I went to one of the four years. hits head

However, my parents are TOTALLY okay with me going to any school I want to… even if it’s not technically affordable. Actually, no school is affordable for me. (Our EFC is so definitely going to be 0.) So… pretty much… money isn’t a top priority. (Because basically all of the colleges I’m looking at end up being the same… because the ones with a higher tuition have a higher need met than the ones with a lower tuition).

The school I want to go to is 8 hours a way. =/ That’s like …96 times further than the two four year schools. XD

My parents would love it if I went to the college an hour away as opposed to my 3-5 hour away choices.

Unfortunately, the closest colleges to me offer little in my fields of interests.

My town only has two top 25 universities. Throw in USC, Occidental and the Claremont Colleges and you have a decent set, but still…

Mines are not really involved in it, only know of the universities in Michigan ( 1. Michigan State University, 2. University of Michigan- Ann Arbor). Though now I no longer have a 3.75 GPA ( due to second semester grades, health issue with food intolerance etc…) and I may be too embarrass to apply any of the universities ( low in ec’s), and will have to let my mom know of my backups ( such as ASU).

My parents just want me to be happy, though I can tell they’re worried about the money. It’s my parents who are pushing me to apply to places like Harvard and Stanford, not because of the prestige and whatnot but because of the fact that they’ll give the most financial aid. Other than that, though, they’re supportive of my preferences and have been really nice about it all. And they’re completely okay with the fact that I either want to go to the east coast or to England. And I’m from California, so that’s quite far away.

I think my parents main concern is the financial part of college. I have some money saved away from my grandmother… but that would only cover like penn state or pitt. (And I want to go to an OOS state school… on the east-ish coast though)

My brother is 3 years older than me (He goes to penn state) and so they’ve already been through the college admissions process with him, and I’ve been on college tours. (It was funny, they kept asking me what I wanted my major to be… and I was still in 8th grade) Compared to other kids in my school, I think I know a lot more about the actual admissions process from a realistic stand point.

However, in the past couple of years my parents have split and had a divorce, so I’m not going to get the whole leisure of having both parents while visiting colleges, etc.

I’m just hoping I can get in somewhere that I like. (My grades suck for this year)

My parents have been surprisingly supportive thus far in the process. Let’s hope that I can say the same April of next year ;)

yeah the only decent one around is the university of calgary. thats it! I bet you guys havent even heard of it. I think everything there has something to do with the oil & gas industry, some how.

My parents want me within an hour-and-a-half radius of my house. It doesn’t matter that I won’t have a car on campus, for some reason. And my mother has said that if I go outside that radius (all my schools are outside that radius now), she’ll move into the dorms with me. She was joking, but I’m not sure if she really WAS joking. My parents are way overprotective. :/

My parents are hellbent on convincing me to go to a small school, or at least not a massive school like Michigan. Distance is not a problem though they would quite like me to go to school in the US (not a joke).

Isnt that kind of hard,Yank? going from UK HS system into US universities? or atleast inconvienient (sp?tootired)?
