parents, I need advice!

Hi,
I hope someone can help me with this matter.

I applied to a private LAC for Fall 07 entry. I submitted my application package all the way in January 07, interviewed once, visited twice, and showed a lot of interest in the college. It was my top choice, initially.

However, as the deadline for transfer student notification came up (JUne 1st), I started to worry as I hadn't heard anything from the school yet.

I kept in contact with the admissions officer who interviewed me, and I updated her on any major scholarship or activity. Nevertheless, I called one week before June 1st asking if my decision was available because I had heard from all my other schools and needed to respond by June 1st. She told me to call her on May 30th to find out. I did so, but she wasn't in her office so I left a voicemail. She didn't respond to this voicemail, nor my other voicemail which I left last week asking, once again, for the decision.

The receptionist told me that all transfer decisions are out, but when I asked for mine, she refered me to this lady who doesn't return my calls.

Do I have any right to call again? I feel that I have paid an application fee, and I should get a decision regardless of whether I get accepted or rejected. I'm really dissapointed with this school, as I had gotten good reviews from others about it. What should I do?

you absolutely have the right to call again and to call as many times as necessary until you get an answer. You paid an application fee, and the school owes you the courtesy of a response. Badger them as much as you have to to get an answer.

You need to call the dean of admissions since you have had such a hard time getting info. Call and politely explain your situation. You may have to first talk to the person's voice mail or secretary, so be prepared to politely explain your situation.

It's time to go to the top. I also wonder if possibly your original admissions officer has been ill (and therefore was disorganized) or isn't answering your phone calls because she no longer works there after being fired for being disorganized.

What college is this? Some people here may have some info about why you've encountered such disorganization.

I agree with the poster above. If you paid the fee, you are entitled to a prompt response from them. Be politely persistent. Write an e-mail; follow up with a written letter, you could even mail it certified mail so someone has to sign for it. And remember, if you they deny you admission, there are many other excellent colleges you could get into, and many still have openings. And you will be successful if you are persistent- persistence is mostly what success is about!

You need to call the Dean of Admissions. You'll probably have to get past the Dean's secretary first. Keep you explanation to the secretary brief, three sentences maximum. I'm certain there's been a mix up somewhere in the Admissions Office. (Yes, an inexplicable delay has happened to me too. I once asked for a simple clarification and my email apparently triggered an "Appeal Request." Regular admissions couldn't act because of the pending "Appeal" and the Appeals Committee was waiting for the nonexistent paperwork!) These things happen sometimes.

Do not hesitate to call. I know it may seem awkward. But you should definitely ask for the Dean of Admissions and explain that you are waiting on your admissions decision.

Putting this in writing will just be the occasion for further delay.

I emailed the admissions officer today; she is actually the Associate Dean of Admissions and she responded saying that they were previously withholding my application to see if additional scholarship money would be available. (I was not told about this previously) She also added that it does not seem possible at this time, so they will not be able to offer me a spot.

I am dissapointed to say the least because they could have informed me about this earlier instead of waiting for me to e-mail them.

Although she told me they were waiting for scholarship funds, I feel that it is a strange excuse to give because I had notified her last month that I had won a private scholarship that will cover my room and board at this college. I really don't understand...

Seems very odd, I agree. And quite unprofessional, imho. I hope you have a good option from among your other schools.

Do you want to name this school?

Sorry you had to have this experience. College/transfer applications are stressful enough, as we all know.

I was deciding between UCLA, UCB, USC, and Kenyon and I have chosen to attend UCLA the coming Fall... I do have options; however, I had my hopes on this college as it was close to home. Thank you for everyone's help. I have to admit though, I am upset with the way the admissions at this college is handled.

I wouldn't post the name of the college here because I know there are posters on here who go to this LAC on the West Coast. I could Pm it.

Good luck at UCLA, snarawsaurus. Who knows whether the way Admissions handles things is representative of how the school treats its students. But it certainly doesn't give a good feeling. You certainly did have great options, and there are real benefits (usually) to be being a little bit farther from home.

Again, best of luck.

Just a thought-I do not know if it is worth pursuing or even feasible---if you have a scholarship that would negate them having to come up with monies originally thought to be needed--can you request they re-evaluate your application in hopes of offering you an acceptance? Obviously UCLA is a FABULOUS school-especially when you consider that over 50,000 people applied for Fall '07---but if your first choice is this other school, it may be worth the extra effort.
Either way-Good Luck!
