Parents of rising seniors: Let the games begin

Screen name: DrDrewsmom

Is your junior male or female: DrDrew is a male ;)

Home state: Idaho

Preferred geographic location for college: West Coast (WA, OR, CA) or Northeast preferred, but willing to look at other areas

Any specific things looking for in a college (large, small, urban, etc.): Must have baseball; prefer smaller-sized school, but not the most important thing

Child's possible academic interests: Engineering; Architectural or Civil

Schools currently on child's list of possibilities: Stanford, MIT, Dartmouth, Lehigh, Tufts, U Washington, Gonzaga, UMich.

Schools we've visited (whether or not child is still interested in going there): Stanford; going to Gonzaga in a few weeks.

Calmom,
Also wanted to let you know when I was looking at Bard just now I noticed they had a Russian/rusian studies major. Might be worth a look.

Debs, don't worry too much. Although this board is public, most people don't post enough information to have to worry about having their kids "unveiled."

What is striking me about our "upcoming seniors" is it seems we have more kids interested in LAC's this year than in the past few years here on CC.

"What is striking me about our "upcoming seniors" is it seems we have more kids interested in LAC's this year than in the past few years here on CC."

I think CC gets some credit for that with all the attention given to LAC's.

I concur with the poster who said three SAT II's in one day may be too much. I think that's especially so with AP exams going on now. My D is taking two SATII tests this Saturday (US history and chemistry), because they are in two of the four subjects she is taking AP exams in, and it seems that she'll be a the peak of her knowledge of those two subjects. I would recommend maybe only one SATII in May, if that's all that overlaps with the AP subjects.

I credit CC as well with getting my D interested in this type of school. I'm the product of an LAC, and I've been talking up the advantages of such schools, but somehow my D wasn't convinced till she started reading the posts of complete strangers who agreed with me. She might have come around with just my encouragement, but it sure helps to have some additional support and information.

Is your junior male or female: Male
Home state: Indiana
Preferred geographic location for college: Midwest, Northeast
Any specific things looking for in a college (large, small, urban, etc.): Mid size
Child's possible academic interests: Film, Entrepreneurship, Screenwriting
Schools currently on child's list of possibilities: Notre Dame, Syracuse
Schools we've visited (whether or not child is still interested in going there): Notre Dame, Syracuse, St Johns, Seton Hall

D's CC recommended these 3 SAT II for her just to get them over with. She took practice SAT II in Math IIC and scored 800, practice SAT II in French and scored 800, and has not taken practice SAT II in US History, but will have the AP exam the day before. She actually HATES history, but figures that's the day she'll know the most.

echosensei - You certainly are in a position to know what your D can handle this Saturday. If she's taking the SATIIs on a standby basis, maybe she could play it by ear and see how she feels that morning. It definitely makes sense to take the US history this Saturday, but it sounds like she would ace the math and French even if she waited till June.

Echo..My D is taking the SAT II in French on Sat as well. She is taking the AP French test right now, so she figured the SAT should feel like a piece of cake compared to the AP test.

Based on my DD's experience last spring, I would definitely give them permission to bag the last SAT II. She had a full plate of APs, and had only one chance at the IIs because of scheduling conflicts in June. She was quite ill the day of the exam (one of her 2 major illnesses last year - the other was on NUMSQT day - great!), took 3 and did OK, but would not recommend that.

Gandert, welcome!

Gandert - check out Digmedia's son's story - it may be of interest, re: filmmaking.

AHH i'm a junior myself... LEAVE PENN ALONE!!!!!! :p

My S already bagged the SAT IIs for Saturday! He only has 1 AP test, but it is Euro on Friday, which is really hard. He also has a state championship athletic event on Wednesday. He told me last week he couldn't prepare for the SAT IIs (the very little bit he intended to prepare....) so he asked to postpone until June. The scheduling conflict he had for June has gone away. For some reason he wants to take the SATI again on Saturday, even though he took it in March. I don't really see the point, but he has his own mind.

heidi - since cali hasn't responded re look of Tulane/BC/Tufts campuses, I'll chime in (sr. parent). S is going to Tulane and we visited all. Imo, BC is the prettiest. Gothic stone bldgs is the overall feel. Tulane is very pretty as you enter, the very extensive "quad" with a mix of traditional stone and brick buildings and a large green quad with paths crisscrossing. Tulane's campus then extends back-back-back and its architectural appeal diminishes in some parts - some other quads v attractive, some more contemporary bldgs not so attractive, one amusingly attractive contemporary building (looks like an old IBM punch card). For some reason, Tufts campus didn't appeal as much to me (lots of low-slung brick buildings in my hazy memory), but there are pretty parts too.

Thanks, echosensei and carolyn... I will check out said schools. Has anyone visited Rhodes and/ or Oberlin? If so, what were your impressions? And yeah, I left before the tour started at Tufts... really gave me a bad vibe for some reason.

Schools we've visited (whether or not child is still interested in going there): Northwestern, U of Oregon, U of Washington, U of WI -Madison, CIM, Case Western, Oberlin, Lawrence, CMU, Wooster, St Olaf, Luther, Concordia

Freps - Thanks for sharing your D's saga and congrats to her on her acceptances! I'm curious to know more about her horrendous visit to Chapman. We're still trying to figure out when we can get out there for a visit. Welcome to CC and please keep us posted on your D's experiences at Eckerd!

LAdylazarus, Dodddad just wrote a very comprehensive trip report of his and his son's visit to Oberlin on the parents board. You should be able to find it easily by searching the parents board using his name and Oberlin.

Thanks Carolyn:)
