Parents of the HS Class of 2008

S1 had interviews that involved on-the-spot programming problems. He generally had a tech HR interview, two programming interviews, and then a fly-put or interview in a local office (he goes to school in a major city). He said all the years of programming competitions proved handy for the interviews. They seemed to be more interested in how one thought about problems vs. how cleanly the code compiled.

myturnnow, congrats to your son! That’s a nice way to wrap up his weekend…and a dream job in a dream location – very cool.

When I was in college, I had on-campus interviews first, then was flown to company locations for further interviews. My D had on-campus interviews, then a 2 day ‘externship’ which involved group projects with other job candidates, presentations, and more interviews. She did have an offer from another company to fly out for more interviews. So her process sounds similar to mine way back when. Perhaps the difference is in the major or type of job?

She had some phone interviews for her intern positions during her earlier college years.

G-Day is getting closer. S reports that he has his cap and gown and has signed off on the registrar’s office e-mail confirming the name to appear on his diploma. He’s headed to Phoenix for spring break next weekend with friends. They’ll stay at the home of another friend and have tickets to see Mizzou play in the regional March Madness final (not yet determined, of course, but they’re sure!). I am sensing the same bonding and memory making that I did in his senior year of high school (only this time probably with more drinking). Today he tweeted about driving down the hilly, wooded road to his apartment with the windows down, listening to his favorite road music. For now, at least, he seems to be taking advantage of those last carefree months. Makes me yearn for those easier days myself. Time to simplify my life!

My son picked up his cap and gown this week, too, but refused my suggestion of announcements. His graduation is May 5th. Is anyone earlier?

Graduation is May 20th, but S actually graduated in Dec but will participate in spring ceremonies. His diploma arrived home yesterday, so I guess it’s official. Since he’s still in the same city as his school, I expect him to drop by campus next week to order his cap & gown. That’ll save us the $25 shipping charge, which doesn’t seem like much after years of tuition.

Plans are all coming together. Older son made his plane reservation this week so he and his gf will be joining us for the graduation.

Now I just have to figure out what I’m going to wear. Any suggestions?

My son graduates from the U of Chicago on June 9; perhaps that’s just about the latest one. So far, I’ve heard nothing whatsoever about diplomas, caps and gowns, schedules for the day, tickets, etc. I assume that my son will inform me on a need-to-know basis!

I finally made hotel reservations today, but that’s all I’ve done so far.

I did ask him whether there’s a yearbook for his class. He gave me a pitying look and claimed to me that there’s no such thing anymore.

My D graduates on June 9 from Carleton. I guess we’re not the only ones that will be waiting till that late date. We’re iin the same boat as you, DonnaL - hotel reservations and not much else. But I think it’s time for us to look at flights.

My daughter graduates May 19th, 6pm.

I win!! D graduates on June 10th, so does that mean we get the prize for the latest graduation? (Actually her university graduates on the 9th, but the college of commerce - her division - has its formal graduation on the tenth. According to d, her friends and classmates prefer to walk on the latter date.)

We are staying at her off-campus apartment, so no hotel reservations for us. I do need to figure out a nice place for dinner for the assembled family members who are making the trek from down south.

Northwestern is June 14-15. Cap and gown ordered, flights booked yesterday!

^^ Rats! Guess I don’t win after all…

My daughter’s Graduation Day is May 21.
We made hotel reservations way back in summer. It’s a small town Iowa…No caps and gowns pick-up until May and no tickets required to attend (it will be outdoors if weather permits). The college mailed us a Guide to the Commencement with the info and schedule for the preceding weekend and they also have all the info on their web site.
We’re planning to drive there from California and stop on the way at Zion National Park for a day of hiking/sightseeing. So I booked the hotel in Springdale (Zion) as well. Her older brother is flying there.

My D’s graduation date is May 14th. We have hotel and dinner reservations. No flight reservations because it’s only a 2 hour drive. Fortunately, D2 finishes her finals early so we can drive to Boston and pick her up the weekend before. I think my D handled the cap and gown. Better check on that one…

Stanford is June 17. We win. (There are several of us on this thread.)

I was going to chime in for a late grad, too, but I see I am too late and we are not that late. June 10.

Have the hotel, but nothing else at all. We booked the heck-a expensive hotel long ago and now I wish we had known that they rent out dorm rooms… or maybe not. Good for having close contact, bad for staying after. But I think the hotel did not REALLY need to jack the price up quite so much.

Ordered 5 announcements for assorted grandparents. They will not think they are gift requests and they would send $$ anyway. Just a momento.

No action so far on the part of the DD graduating re getting the cap and gown or MORE IMPORTANT to me, getting the Senior Picture scheduled. I’ll kill her if she doesn’t get it done. grrr

esobay, I’m with you on the senior picture. I really wanted S to sit for this. He didn’t. Harumph.

S’ school has a yearbook that gets sent to all graduates in the fall. He took his picture during fall semester, so that’s all done. I did have to return the first prints the photographer sent because of strange shadows. Fortunately, they corrected them.

I haven’t heard a word about senior pictures. Graduation is May 12. I don’t know what to wear, either.

Pictures? I’ll be lucky if he allows me to snap a few!
No word from S2 about anything related to graduation. The university grad. is May 4. His college’s grad. is May 5. He has not said if he plans to attend all,one or none.
He still has not heard back from any of his summer internship (required to receive diploma) applications so that is weighing heavily on our minds.
We own a home not too far from his university so we’ll be sleeping in our own bed on graduation weekend. No reservations necessary:)

D graduates on May 14. Flight and hotel, at jacked up graduation weekend price, are booked. Like others, I’m hoping D has taken care of cap and gown, but I’ve heard no mention of it!
