Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

AP scores get mailed out in batches across the country— usually starting on the west coast. One poster in San Diego posted getting scores in mail today, but other CA and Oregon/Washington posters still haven’t received them. We are hoping for tomorrow.

My D called on 6/30 for her scores (paying the $8) and then realized that USC had them posted the next morning!! S1 isn’t anxious and is waiting for the mail to bring his scores.

ShawD is at in her yoga teacher training program and can’t call and doesn’t really have internet access (life in the ashram is supposed to be spiritual). She did all of the work to register for courses but couldn’t actually enroll in them online until July 4th, when she was already incommunicado from an electronic standpoint (actually, she can text me but don’t tell anyone).

So, I just did most of the actual enrolling from Venice (it wouldn’t take a section for a math course, so I’ll need to contact them I guess). ShawWife and I are having a lovely time. I am trudging around with her to the Venice Biennale (her interest, not mine). Last night, we had dinner with one of my clients and his family who happened to be visiting Venice at a lovely restaurant on a canal in an out of the way-ish area and tonight we had dinner at another, almost as good restaurant on another out of the way canal location. ShawSon is at home, working., though he had July 4th weekend on Cape Cod with one of his friends.

We’ll worry about shopping when ShawD and we are back at home. Also, it would be good to figure out where to get stuff in Canada. There is no Amazon Prime in Canada. Is there a BB&B there? I know there’s costco, but don’t know about costco.com.

Stumbled across this 18 for 18 idea: a variety of different novelty bandaids: [Amazon.com: Rainbow Monkey Multicolored Novelty Gag Band-aids: Toys & Games](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013TQ0YC/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_3?ie=UTF8&m=A2UDNPGKURPVSY)

Shawbridge, are you trying to make us jealous? I was in Italy last summer and Venice was enchanting. I’m glad to hear that you and Shawife are having a nice time.

We’re waiting for the AP results by mail because I refuse to pay any other unnecessary $$ to college board. I don’t think that the results will affect my D’s schedule. She assured us that she did NOT score well enough on Environmental Science to get credit, and already signed up for the intro course. Her other two tests would only give her elective credit.

Shawbridge - I LOVE Venice, it is one of my favorite places…enjoy!

momjr, not really trying to make people jealous. I do so much traveling that it is nice to get some benefits from it (actually I enjoy traveling outside the US and to a couple of places in the US). I get to go to lots of nice places. But, most people wouldn’t like some aspects of this – I’m in Europe 6 1o 12 times a year, plus a few times in Asia and/or S. America each year. Plus Canada trips (which often seem like commuting to me). I’ve got August off, I think, but Stockholm or Copenhagen, Vancouver, Zurich, the Hague, and likely Mumbai and who knows where else before year-end (usually London). It does explain why I posted 3 times in an hour – just responded and figured I wouldn’t be checking in for a few days.

In this case, ShawWife is trying to create some new things to do to augment her career in anticipation of the nest that will empty in September. She had a teaching gig in Tuscany and can do it again next year. I just dropped in at the end of her gig. She’s agreed to spend a month next spring or summer in Venice (hopefully this can be coordinated with Tuscany). So, I’ll try to come visit and maybe the kids can do so as well. It’s not clear to me that either assignment really will be a big benefit to her career, but she’ll have to see. But, I think it will make her feel more whole than just continuing to do what she does but without ShawD at home. [The bond is so strong that the separation will be an issue].

What does your wife ‘do’? Venice and Tuscany sound lovely. I was last there as a single 25 year old.

New topic - Has anyone inherited a ‘truckload’ of slides from their parents. I have thousands of slides (some glass) going back 80+ years. Fortunately they are all cataloged with dates, people and places IDed. I’d like to do something meaningful for my parents, sister, son, niece and nephew (and future grandkids).

FlMathMom, she’s a painter, regionally well-known. Plus, she’s got a dynamic personality and is a terrific teacher. So, she can teach art classes. This last trip was with well-to-do-ish ladies, who almost all went back to school for BFAs. Folks like this love the idea of going to Tuscany to learn about how to do landscape painting. She gets transportation, room, board and a fee. In previous summers, she’s also taught at a good US school’s Rome program. It has never been clear how these kinds of teaching jobs would help her career. I persuaded her many years ago not to teach in the US at adjunct (slave) wages and instead to make her art and become well-known. Now, she occasionally does a guest class (and gets modest honoraria – fine art is no way to make a good living). I think being invited feels good to her because she’s often invited to talk about her work. And, she isn’t at the mercy of budget-cutting universities.

She also can work at a print studio and make images that they produce/sell and split the revenue with her (to their advantage, but hey, it’s art).

You could get someone to scan all of the slides into jpegs and produce books (via Apple or others) and slideshows. ShawD loves to make the slideshows. Grandparents would probably love them.

I think the end of July. But, S’s college has then posted so he can see what they are giving him credit for.

Flmathmom - congrats on the scores!

shaw - I will have to live vicariously through you and your travels til 11yo D graduates HS.

Wow, take a week off to move and you all are on Page 20! Will have to catch up later, love the title of the new thread, hope everyone is enjoying the summer!!!

FlMM - My H is very geeky and bought a slide and negative scanner. He’s gotten really great computer files of all of the family slides, plus made amazing improvements on many of our old pictures, too.

I tried to write my D’s cab story, but CC slowed down and swallowed it … I’ll try again, but more quickly this time: I booked her to LGA because she is familiar with that airport, but the downside was finding out there was no public transportation to Garden City. I was told by Adelphi $50 for the cab was the cheapest way, and that was corroborated by the cab/car/limo companies. What D found out when she got in a cab was that without a reservation the airport cabs charge $100. She called me, managing to contain her panic, and I had her get out and talk to the Port Authority. Also I had e-mailed her the cab company info. So she was able to call for a cab for the $50 fee, and all she lost was some time waiting for it to arrive. I was a little worried because the dorm desk was closing down at 9 p.m., but she could have FBed her roomie/O-aide if necessary to let her know she was going to be late. All worked out fine in the end. Hurray for smart phones!

Thanks for the details, kinderny - sometime when she has a daytime flight and little luggage we’ll do a flight to/from JFK instead. I’m thinking even by Friday night she might know someone who’s leaving to share a cab with.

No news from her yet … we’re assuming that is good news. They keep them hopping at these Orientations, I know. But of course I’m curious.

No one at our house is changing rooms, except the cat who lives upstairs (only the 2 girls’ rooms and a bath up there) is going to get awfully lonely unless she braves coming down. I’ll visit her when I can, but we’re also going to see if she can be enticed to come out of hiding after 13 years (she’s very affectionate and sweet - but only happy in “her” part of the house. Slight problem - she hates the dog, of course. I’m imagining eventually we’ll change some furnishing up there to reflect our Ds’ more adult lifestyles - not only what they need here as guests, but also what they’ll take to fill their own apartments.

Emmybet: I’m glad to hear that your daughter worked things out with the cab. It’s stressful waiting at home while they navigate this stuff. I’m sure that she’s really busy at Orientation and hasn’t had time to call. At my D’s orientation, the parents and kids were separated for a day and a half, and I didn’t hear from my D until the last morning. A lot of the other parents were uncomfortable with the separation, but I think that the school did it intentionally to get us all used to things.

Flmathmom: Congrats on the outstanding scores!

Regarding AP mailing…

I saw a thread yesterday linked from last year showing when AP scores were hitting mailboxes last year. Darn if I can find it today. West coast was earliest around 7/6 with the mid-Atlantic on 7/14 (DC/VA/MD). The latest date was 7/16. I hope this is somewhat helpful.

FlMathMom: Congrats on the scores. That is awesome. Did you IB Coordinator call or did you get them online? The kids (DS, roommate and roommate’s GF) all texted and emailed the coordinator today but she did not respond. Last year, she called us with the results. I know there is a way to find them online, but none of them recall receiving a username and password for IB!

OhioStarFish: We bought the bed set in the crate last Sunday at BB&B with a 20% off coupon. The dark and light blue striped version. I sent DS links to four options for bedding and told him to pick one or else he’d get pink comforter/SpongeBob sheets ensemble I was threatening.

Only room rearranging we are doing is that DH will use DS’s bathroom. We have shared a sink for all but one year of our 22 year marriage and after August 17, we won’t have to!

Why does the College Board tease with the score results? Is it because they can? Why can’t they post them online like the SAT scores? I assume that less people take AP tests than SAT tests. My D is at camp, and emailed me to tell me that her Calculus teacher had the scores. The teacher emailed the students the range of scores, but obviously did not give out scores of individual students in the group email. My D did emailed the teacher to ask for her actual score.

We live in MA, so based on previous years, and the whole West to East pony express delivery method… we may get ours in September if we are lucky!

Re:AP scores. If your D requested the scores to be sent to her college. Check with them to see if they have the scores. My S got the scores on line from his college and also info on credits he can claim.

FlMathMom: I too have inherited the “truckload” of slides from my parents. Many of the slides are from family trips that would be great to get on cd and share with my brother and sister. However, they took so many wonderful trips later in life - India, China, Israel, Italy…but other than the photos of our parents, the other pictures are not really relevant to us. We got a handheld viewer to be able to look at them conveniently (still have the old one-slide-at-time projector). Maybe my empty nest project (one of them) will be to get a scanner and put them on cd. If you have a lot of slides, it is much more cost effective to buy a decent scanner than to have a service do it.

gsmomma:

We live in the town where the Pony Express was born and Jesse James died–and nothing much has happened ever since.

History buffs love our town. We have the original Pony Express stables and the house were Jesse was shot. Y’all come visit!

My D is getting ready for her senior year here in PA. I’m new to this official MT stuff. I went to school in Maine and everything was much simplier. Should she audition in the fall or the spring?

S’s last waitlisted school (Vandy) officially announced yesterday that the waitlist was closed and the class is full. Now I know for sure where I will start sending the checks later this month!

This appears to be around post 300. Wasn’t someone going to post a list of schools or move-in dates around this post number?
