**I have taken the first and last move-in dates for this countdown from the list on this thread. To try and list all of them would be overkill to say the least.

First new student move-in is the University of Georgia on August 9th. (Excludes cadet training at West Point)
Move-in day in 15 days. Just TWO weeks from tomorrow!

Last new student move-in is the University of Southern Oregon on September 22nd
Move-in day in 59 days.**

If there are earlier or later move-in dates, please post them so that I can pick them up and adjust the countdown postings.

All this talk about “SmartPhones” reminds me of the days when I was at college and the “SmartPhone” we had was the payphone in the hall were your floormates (might) take messages for you

My DD is in touch with 2 out of her 3 roommates. Which is a bummer because how can they split up who brings what. Hopefully they will be in touch shortly, but another little hiccup in the moving in process.

At least I found a cupcake bakery 2 min away from campus!

fwiw, my S can get and reply to his gmail (which includes his forwarded .edu email) on his dumb phone. The email app costs $5/mo and then it is 1.99 per MB but 1MB is more than sufficient for reading text emails. He wasn’t sure if he’d want to keep it at school since he’ll probably be carrying his laptop around all the time. Much cheaper than a smartphone data plan anyhow.

Has anyone bought a 'laptop cooling pad" for their kids? We finally bought the laptop and ordered the laptop backpack, and are wondering if the cooling pads really work? D likes to work sitting on her bed with her laptop, and it does get hot. Does anyone have a suggestion for the best type?

^ My DS was looking at cooling pad also so I’d be interested in anyone’s thoughts on that as well as my splurges for a new desktop (DH getting current one), new smart phone and tablet or laptop. I only have a desktop now but we will be travelling about 30% of the year starting next month (US and internationally). I NEED to stay connected to DS, parents, furry brother (dog) and CC friends. I know NOTHING about this stuff other than desktops. Since we are leaving 3 weeks from tomorrow, I better learn fast. I have fine motor skills issues and a paralyzed left hand & arm so teeny tiny buttons and delicate electronics are out.

Flmathmom: All that travelling sounds like fun. I recommend either a netbook or Ipad if you will be travelling a lot. A friend with health issues that impair typing has had good luck using a stylus to type on her Ipad. My H got me a Toshiba netbook for my birhthday in January. It’s great for travel, but I don’t love the keyboard. I wish that I had held out for an Ipad.

I got a cooling pad a few years ago at Costco and it worked well for our old laptop. It was one that seemed to get hot easily. That laptop was stolen and our newer one doesn’t seem to get nearly as hot. That said, none of us are on it for hours.

My son is leaving for Vermont first thing tomorrow morning for his fun orientation. I’m more concerned with getting him packed and to the train on time then I am with the actual orientation! One good thing is that he’s going north. Hoping it’s a bit cooler up there. It hit 103 degrees here Friday. ugh.

We all have smart phones and use them constantly. I think we would need a 12 step program if someone took them away from us.

Should be cooler in Vermont, it’s alot cooler feeling in NJ today, hoping that these threats of rain actually bring good rain. My grapes, which were looking terrific earlier have dropped alot of unripened fruit all over my deck due to the heat.

rain? did I hear rain??? PLEASE bring it on; massive thundershowers would be great…

I started feeling the effects of the weather (finally) last night; thought I was going to pass out so I went to sleep (after drinking a bottle of water)…

btw, Ipad discussion is on another thread as well; got mine last week and love it…i’m a PC but this will be great for travelling, etc.

The iPad would be ideal for traveling, but not a replacement for a laptop if I could only have one IMO. We love ours and have used it on lots of college trips and holidays, but it is an extra family gadget.

According to my H, a computer pro, a special laptop cooling fan is not necessary, as laptops will not overheat. It is more for personal comfort since they can get hot, but any flat lap desk will serve the same purpose as it allows air to circulate, where a pillow or blankets on a bed will not.

Not quite a newbie but haven’t been much of a regular contributor either. So many good ideas being thrown out there! This may make me more of a participant.

BI - You might want to check your online public library for NY Times. Ours offers free subscription. I checked out Atrix. So far my favorite. Also read about new item - Central Station. A monitor that acts as a wireless docking station for any laptop. So now maybe I won’t get a desktop. OY!! Just a Central Station & laptop.

I think I’ll go back to picking out sheets.

Adding me to 8/13 with BamaMomof3. I think S & H are leaving on 8/12. They just reminded me that it was less than 3 weeks, wow. I think next weekend might be laundry stamp/iron on weekend. Hope everyone is doing well, I am back at work & exhausted at night so I haven’t been on much. Lots of working, not much earning unfortunately and it’s only temporary, but better than not working.

My S says he does not need a cooling pad for his new laptop. I guess the newer laptops do not get hot or have a build-in cooling fan. Instead, I bought a cooling pad for myself from BB & B yesterday. It is called Lap Lite ($19.99)and I like it so far. It allows air to circulate beteen the laps and laptop and not like the pillow type which can get hot.

My older son uses a cooling pad for his HP quad-core laptop since he fried the first HD. It runs very hot and I haven’t been impressed with the HP at all. Having said that, he’s a gamer (yes, I do cringe when I say it, but that’s why it gets hot…). My other two have never needed them (Sony & Toshiba - yea, I didn’t make that purchase…).

FlMaMom - there are certainly newer phones then the atrix but they are getting really big IMO. When Bluejr was looking he found several were just too bulky to put in his front pants pocket comfortably (and he wears fairly loose pants). The atrix is comparable in size to an iPhone. With a good case (otterbox) it’s still easy to put in a pocket or purse.

FlMathMom, I travel extensively for work (Europe 6-12 times a year; Asia/Pacific one or two times a year; Mexico/Central America/South America 0-5 times/yr); plus US/Canada travel (maybe 5-15 trips per year). I don’t go to Antarctica and haven’t been to Africa yet. Plus I travel a fair bit for pleasure. I recently purchased a MacBook Air 13" because it is light, has a great screen, and is very thin. I have an Android Phone (Google G2 from T-Mobile – I like Android a little better than iOS and find T-Mobile to be superior to ATT). No iPad yet – I don’t think I’ll need one with the Air, but also because it’s not a creating device, just a consuming one. One of my friends who lives on the East Coast and runs a company on the West Coast has an 11" Air, an ipad and an iphone. I’ve had many computers and phones over the years (an excellent Fujitsu Table PC) but I think the Air is a great thing for serious traveling. I also have a T-Mobile Rocket stick for getting internet in the US when I don’t have access to a secure wi-fi hotspot. Too expensive to use outside the US. ATT has a version that can be a hotspot for other computers, but my G2 can do that as well.

Apple’s iCloud service, that will is supposed to seamlessly sync Mac computers, iphones, ipads, and ipods could conceivably be sensational (will have to see how it really works) and then I might even replace my Android phone with an iphone. The jury is still out on what it really does.

We have this cooling pad: [Targus Lap Chill Mat | Staples®](<a href=“Targus® Lap Chill Mat™ | Staples”>Targus® Lap Chill Mat™ | Staples)
but we got it at Costco for $19.99. The laptop we use definitely gets hot if you use it on your lap–it’s fine if it’s sitting on a table top. I plan to get one for DS since I know he will use it mostly on his lap, and that will make it hot, since it won’t be able to vent properly.

Shoutout to MilitaryMom–I hope the move is going well. Moving is not fun, and it takes time to get settled. Just wanted you to know I was thinking about you and hoping all was going well with the move combined with the new college experience!

We are trying to get DS to make a decision on which laptop he wants for college. He’s decided he doesn’t want the one offered by the school (a Dell, and he doesn’t care for it). Hopefully he will realize that if we order it online he must make a decision soon! He’s a procrastinator, and since I really am not vested in the computer, I’m happy to wait for him to realize he needs it! --that’s me! ;)
