Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Move-in just gets closer and closer … tomorrow we’ll be leaving in one month!

Did some dorm shopping today. We’re focusing until we get there on her bed and things we know will fit in her (own) desk and the 1’ X 7’ Ikea bookcase we have from her sister’s college experience. She got her comforter today and some throw pillows, just needs to decide on a mattress pad type. She’s got her electronics and desk stuff pretty much set.

We’ll deal with clothes storage once we see the closet and dresser space (triple room). Maybe we’ll take some stuff home and ship it later, or maybe get some storage boxes if they’ll fit after all. She’s unfazed, and we are, too, since we’ll be in a car.

Her greatest fun today was that she decided to put all of her DVDs (way more than 50) in a zippered case. They’ll all fit in a space smaller than a large textbook, and she can just grab them and go if there’s a party or something in another room. Being her she is organizing them in a creative way. It’s great to see the empty boxes that I now know will NOT have to travel with us. But I think she’ll fill her bookcase with books before the school year even starts.

She talked to 1 suitemate, who wants a bed (they’ll have 1 loft and 1 set of bunkbeds) that D doesn’t want. Hopefully #3 will be happy with what’s left; as the first roommate said, it’s first come first served. Roommate 3 doesn’t seem as interested in discussing these things on FB. Oh, well. Lots of things will be best dealt with at move-in - how they’ll organize bathroom supplies, wastebaskets, common room stuff. We’re going with clip-on everything - lamps, fans, anything we can. Surfaces, including the floor, are going to be at a super premium in this room.

D thinks this all is fun. Hey, college life IS fun. It’ll have its rough times, but I think she’ll have a blast.

Thanks Shawbridge. I always find your responses super helpful. I a little reluctant to switch to the dark side from being a PC person for 35 years. I’ve heard rave reviews about the Air and I can’t wait to try out an iPad. I really have to see how easy/hard it will be for me to handle these devices that rely on 2 hands and fine motor skills. I work better with a mouse than a trackball. Onward to the store. Not everything can be done online.

regarding hot laptops. I have found that I have to blow out the vents on my HP every other month or so with canned air. I am always amazed at all the dust and dirt that comes out. I can tell when it needs to be cleaned because it starts getting hot.

**I have taken the first and last move-in dates for this countdown from the list on this thread. To try and list all of them would be overkill to say the least.

First new student move-in is the University of Georgia on August 9th. (Excludes cadet training at West Point)
Move-in day in 14 days. ONLY 2 WEEKS!

Last new student move-in is the University of Southern Oregon on September 22nd
Move-in day in 58 days.**

If there are earlier or later move-in dates, please post them so that I can pick them up and adjust the countdown postings.

Back from one vacation and going away Saturday again for our annual (maybe last?) Hershey Park trip. I will waive to kathiep as we pass by her town en route!

I love HP! Nothing but good to say about them-but don’t get me started on Apple! I guess so much of this is based on personal experience-we will be buying another HP laptop when my son gives me the specs-whenever that will be. Target has a big sale on twin XL everythings this week and he is going to go with his little sister to pick out what he wants-she is getting excited about furnishing his room-I told her until I can get a look at it on move in day we aren’t going overboard-we only live an hour away so we have that luxury.

He is having the best summer of his life. He thought orientation was OK but he did make some connections and he feels very excited about getting started. He did do that weird exercise momofboston mentioned on here-I asked him about it after reading what she posted-it didn’t faze him much since they did something similar to that in a program they held at his school this year. I am in her camp-I think it is weird.

He cannot locate his roommate so they can’t discuss anything about the room. The biggest thing would be renting the microfridge-no way I am signing off on dropping $200 plus for one year of that.

He is writing away! He is so excited about his book project-the one he finished and the one he started last summer he is now combining into a new book-I think anyway!

I’ve bumped the move-in date thread, and copied the list from #984 there (with gsmomma’s update). AvonHSDad, would you mind just posting the link at the end of your update each day? That way it can stay in it’s own thread but there can be an easy link where everyone knows to look for it and the updates are all in one place. Thanks ‘Cptn’!

note: and…I managed to cross posts with gsmomma…oh, well…

@ gsmomma - You must not have noticed in the move-in thread…I had already made your correction :)

@ blueiguana - Good idea to add the link. It’s in place for tomorrow’s post. Thanks.

^ Thanks Cptn! That’s why you get the big-bucks  (or at least the most important jobs here). I so appreciate you keeping us rolling on all the countdowns!!

D had her last meet yesterday. She has decided to try some different things in college. So, her beloved sport, which has taken 20 - 25 hours a week all year since 7th grade, is now “just for fun.” It was quite something; a combination of joy, pride, moving onward, and some sadness too. The beauty of swimming is that she can do it forever (and will do club in college). Her team embraced her and the other swim moms embraced me. It has been a gift of health, friendship, victory, and necessary time management (with a sizeable dose of stress, fatigue, and humility on the side). This was our biggest “last.” I know you guys get it.

Good Morning, All! Can’t believe I walk away from CC for a month and you all have almost 1000 posts?? It’s good to hear the updates from you.

mnmom - I feel for you. What a wonderful good-bye you both got. There are so many mixed feelings (at least on our part as parents) as kids make this transition.

Hi, all!

Jealous of all of you who are vacationing this week, especially those close to water.

Happy belated bday to fogfog’s kiddo!

Last week we dropped our 10yo at a camp on a college campus. While unpacking her stuff in a double dorm room, I started thinking about how my S things would fit in. The D’s dorm room has lots of storage space – a wardrobe, a huge dresser, a desk and a good-size bookcase, but except for the space under the bad - practically no floor space.

Son will have a single room, and I have no idea what is the size of it, so I am thinking on postponing buying some of the larger items (refrigerator, chair, storage boxes, etc.) until the move-in day. We are otherwise pretty close to being done with shopping. When I say “we”, I really mean “moi” – S doesn’t care about college shopping as much as he should. His words: “If I have my books and my music, I can sleep on the floor”. BTW, he is taking his turntable (his grad present) with undisclosed number of LPs and iPod with thousands of songs with him.

We will have to think about the phone for DS. He is funny in a way – goes for the latest iPod and high-end computer, but always picks the cheapest cell phone and phone plan. As he is planning to spend a summer and a semester abroad during his 4 year of the UG college, we would have to re-think his phone plan. OTOH, Skype is always there.

Between 4 of us and including our work laptops we own 3 desktop and 4 laptop computers (partially because my DH doesn’t throw anything) and we rarely travel w/o at least one laptop. Real PITA when flying. DD will get iPad this September and I hope it will replace a laptop when going on vacation, but most likely her iPad would be an additional item to drag along.

blueiguana- thanks for making the update! I am so glad D realized BEFORE we showed up that she had the wrong date for move in!

My laptop from work is an HP. I have an extended battery, and it gets so hot, even when it is sitting idle.I may need to clean out the vents.

Hubby was transferring files to D1s new laptop (Toshiba) yesterday, and he said it didn’t get hot at all. Maybe I will just get her a lapdesk, and forget about the cooling fan.

D’s old laptop used to get very hot. But S and H have new Lenovos and they really run very cool. D has finally decided on getting a Lenovo as well - so no cooling pad needed.

I did buy a laptop desk at BBandB. Here it is:
[My Ultimate Pro Lap Bed Desk - Bed Bath & Beyond](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=17258877)

Reminds me of one I used to use a long time ago. We also pre-ordered a back rest. If she decides on studying in her room, on her bed - these two will come in useful.

A lot of conversation about smart phones. D says she doesn’t want a smart phone - but she needs a phone with some talk minutes and unlimited texting. Any ideas which one is good to get? We don’t have a family plan at home - so could go with any carrier that has good service in Cleveland. Thanks!

Hi All

Well thought I would have 5 pages to read since the last time I was here–yet many of the posts were reposting the move in list…so it cut my reading down significantly.

Had a quick trip to visit kiddo–who will be home in 2 weeks. Had a fabulous dinner–totally over the top Kobe steaks, lobster bisque etc etc…at a fabulous place. And over the two days I managed to have 5 different varieties of cold water oysters, 2 varities of clams and some lobster. YUM! Kiddo was happy with the first 7 of the 18 for 18…And will get the rest in about 2 weeks when home and we do a family birthday celebration. Was fun to enjoy a bit of the festivities together.

Other than that–move in, connecting with the roommate and shopping are not on the radar. Kiddo will be out of the country for a bit so not much can be done til after everyone is back.
I am a little nervous about “being behind” since so many here are on top of it all.

Glad to here everyone is doing well.
