Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Thank you jmn and meteormom-- now I will have the courage to call BC/BS.

Our dorm mountain began today with a pile of D’s favorite plays.

I love that the big list is still getting longer!

I am too hot to think!

woody isn’t your D the one that wants to study a bazillion languages and go abroad? From our previous conversations I’d say she sounds pretty cool :)

The music major forum has a dad who compiles a list of all acceptances and then all decisions. I haven’t seen the final decision list yet but I’ll post it when I do.

Gwen,

We have BCBS of Illinois (though we live in So. Cal) and they definitely go anywhere in the US. It’s a huge network, so you should be good to go. You made me realize it might be good to find a local doctor for our kids…just in case.

Just ordered silk long johns for D2. I bought them for D1 few years ago. She said they were life savers. Sierratradingpost has them, originally 42, got them for 17 after discount.

Hi all our newbies… great to have you on here. I just popped on here to comment on distance away from home. I think my DS gets the prize for that. We live in San Diego, CA and my S is going to SLU in Canton, NY… I think just about as far away from home as possible… but those of you who know my DS, this is no surprise.

Snowflake… great to hear from you… please keep me informed of anything I will need to communicate to my DS next year as far as move in goes… also and how your S likes it… pm me if you think about it…:-))) Did your S get the pre-O trip he wanted?

Snowflake, I couldn’t find the list with online resources either. If you like amazon, just about everything can be found there.

Hi everyone! So glad to have found this thread. Just spent the last hour reading everyones posts. Feels nice to connect with others in the same shoes. I haven’t been on this site for a while thinking that I was ready to move on since this is my last one to launch. Nice to know I can continue:)
My S is launching August 24 to Georgetown, but he’s been so busy this summer, that sometimes it seems like he’s already launched. Just got a text from him as he met up with other GT students in a pre-orientation trip. He’ll get back on the 12th and we’ll leave on the 21 to start driving from Texas. We have always driven our children to move them in, kind of like a ritual, but I’m having second thoughts this time around. Can someone add us to the list? The last time I added to a list, I screwed it up!

How does one find the music forum? I can’t seem to locate it…

It is under college majors:

[Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums)

5boys - Yes, S did get his first choice in the pre-Outdoor program … advanced canoeing. I was glad he didn’t get his 4th choice, advanced rock climbing. I need to not worry about my hiker boy! And he also got his first choice FYP which involves music. I’ll let you know how the semester goes as he (successfully) launches.

MizzBee - yes, it seems if I can’t find it in one place, Amazon is the default. thanks.

What important papers are you sending to college with your student? Passport? SS Card? Birth Certificate? All or none of the above?

Hello class of 2016 wackaloons, newbies and uncloaked lurkers and familiar fonts alike! I have been mostly absent from the 2012 thread this month, but glad to see we’re all going forward here. My girl leaves for NOLA and Tulane in ten days. Her dad is taking her and getting her set up in her dorm room (she moves in the 17th) and then she has marching band camp for a week. Then my husband and I will fly down and bring her more stuff and anything she forgot on official move-in weekend on the 25th. We’ll be there for convocation, reception with the President, etc.

I’m so excited for her, but my sadness at her leaving sneaks up on me in strange places. I opened a checking account for myself at Chase Bank yesterday, to make transfers etc easy since that is where she will be banking at Tulane–she’s all set up already. While chit chatting with the lady setting it up, telling her why, I started to cry. So embarrassing. She handed me a tissue and told me at least I wasn’t crying about my bank account, like most people she sees cry there. I said that would come after I paid the tuition at the end of this month.

Special shout out to Elka67…Rutgers will be Tulane’s first football opponent on Sept. 1st! I understand it will be televised on the CBS Sports network. I’ll be looking for the band shots of course :)

S doesn’t drive so we’ll get a state ID card. That’s it. besides health insurance card.

DS never got it together well enough to get passport completed before the start of school, so he will take DL, SS card, health and auto insurance card, AAA card a copy of his voter registration. He will need the first two for jobs.

We were told at orientation that students who will work on campus need a birth certificate or passport -I’m guessing to prove citizenship. Hope we remember to pack that.

S will take his passport card (as ID besides his college ID and will also need it to fill out the I-9 form for student employment) and health insurance card.

Hey Renee,
Hope CBS Sports has lots of band shots for you!

As for ID, S will have his DL, health insurance card. He’ll have a copy of his passport id page and ss card, luckily we can always drop of the real ones if necessary. I lost my ss card once and it was such a hastle getting it reissued, so I don’t want to risk it.

That’s awesome Snowflake! I’m sure he will have a blast… my DS would want advanced anything.

Renee… you made me laugh and cry all in the same minute of time. I feel somewhat like a cheater, as I will have my DS around for awhile longer, but I think I am kidding myself, as he will probably never be home anyway. He is already signed up for a Wilderness EMT class in Wyoming the whole month of Nov. sigh!!.. and as far as the dorm mountain… there would be no such thing around here… I will be lucky to have my S pick out sheets…as he thinks he would be just find in a sleeping bag. He would probably pack all items in one small backpack.
I laughed when someone on here told her DS… " Stop it, you are ruining my moment"… or something like that. I could TOTALLY relate. I will have to tell my DS to humor me… I have no daughters for god’s sake.

5boys, laughing and crying in the same minute is my specialty lately. Feeling a bit like a manic teen myself lately.

5boys - you can wait til Sep-Oct and swoop in and buy all the dorm bedding he needs next yeart at clearance prices. :)
