Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

good decision, katie93! about the not asking…

DS is officially launched and DH and I are home. We enjoyed spending some time with DS and some time at the beach in a time share. Move in was hot, but very well organized. Five suitcases and a trip to pick up pre-ordered items from BB&B was all it took! Well, and a follow up trip the next day to Target for a few extra items.

UM has activities for parents scheduled everyday from Wed to Saturday. Some parents stay, some don’t. It was fun to attend Kick off and learn the UM cheers and hear the band. There was also a breakfast with the President Shalala. She really is a unique individual and I was so happy to be able to meet her!

I am not feeling as weepy as I expected (although I did tear up when we said goodbye to DS). Mostly I am really excited for DS! UM offers him so many opportunities and wonderful experiences. It really is a great fit for him and I am so happy for him! Jealous too. I’d like to go back to school again!

Good luck to all the launches scheduled in the next few days! Congrats to all the parents who successfully launched well balanced individuals! We all done good!

Congrats to all those who have already launched and good luck to the up and coming launchers!!

I’m with you geogirl1 - “I’d like to go back to school again!” So…maybe I will!!!

Same here…

And we went through old pictures last night (hubby and I, boys were at friends). It’s been a wonderful life… I both wince at it ending and look forward to their futures. But it all comes with a few sniffs right now. There are so many memories. Of that, I’m glad. I’m glad we chose to do a lot (travel, experiences, etc) with our boys.

And this morning is his last time as a regular at our church…

Happy launch day, kleibo, mspearl, nervousnellie1, PinotNoir!

Our “launch” is pretty anticlimactic. I drive him to the airport in one hour, have a 5 second hug while security guards on segues start rolling over to tell me I’ve parked by the curb too long, and that’s it. We’ll drive out on Wednesday with his stuff and spend a couple days on campus, so I feel like that will be the real send off.

My son sent an email that he arrived safely at his college on Saturday. There were a few connections, so we were worried that he might miss his bus. We hoped that he found his coordinators and now is on the way to the 6-day pre-orientation program. On Aug. 24, we will call him and check whether everything is OK. Somehow, since the last few months, he has been quite outgoing for a normally shy boy. It will be very interesting to see how he will do in college.

D1 showed up yesterday to help rearranging D2’s room. It originally had the bed on one side and desk/chest on the other side, so it looked long and narrow. D1 moved the bed to be perpendicular to the desk, more like L shape, which made the room more square and bigger. She took one used sheets and made a long bed skirt out of it, then put D2’s storage bins under the bed. It looks very nice now.

Last night D1 invited D2 and some of her friends to her sorority’s get together. D2 said she was invited to few other parties. The weather here is beautiful here. Kids are going to gorges tanning. Parents started to leave yesterday. We are leaving today after lunch and last run to the grocery store.

We knew today was coming, but it doesn’t make it any easier. We are going to miss her.

So DS is launched, kinda. We moved three storage containers two duffels and two large suitcases into his temporary fraternity. Wonderful guys, but the broken furniture was too much for him to consider the house seriously, so he will probably be moving within days.

The school spent most of the day convincing parents that our wonderful sons are in the drivers’ seat. They ring in the class with a bell from the first entering class in a nice ceremony.

I tried not to cry and basically held up. I got a very long hug which is great. Now we are home and adjusting to life without him.

congrats MidniteMom, sounds like he did fine alone. Keep us posted.

Heading out in about 20 minutes. My good friend is coming over to say goodbye to S-she gets a little carried away so all that will do is make me not look so bad later! :-)

Traffic is going to SUCK but all in all I am thinking it will be a good day!

Happy launch day, kleibo, mspearl, and PinotNoir as well!!

Traffic sucks on a Sunday?

It’s “Birthday Month!!” For whatever reason, about 8 of us in our family have B-days in August, so we pick a weekend and celebrate 'em all at once. Today is that day, and we’re hosting. We will have about 25+ family members over. This is the long version of the story that ends with…Sorry for the early call…Here are today’s launched!

Congrats!!

OK - phase 1 of launch sequence is complete. S and I got starbucks at the corner near our house before heading to the airport, so he was very chatty on the way there. I got a really nice long hug curbside, then watched him walk through the doors, and then bawled the first 5 minutes of my drive home. We had a great chat, and my one piece of parting advice was that his challenge is with discipline when it comes to mundane things, so if he finds at some time that he doesn’t like the way things are going, he should look at around at that sort of stuff - is his room and his stuff neat enough, is he always running 5 minutes late, is he keeping up with homework that he doesn’t find interesting. He was polite enough to pretend to appreciate it. Phase 2 starts when we drive away Wednesday morning.

Hugs to oldfort - when all is said and done, it’s just weird when our kids don’t live with us anymore. If all has gone well for the last 18+ years, we like them, and then of course we miss them. It sounds like your girl is settled in well. Your D’s go to the same school, right?

PinotNoir- thanks. D1 graduated in 2011 from the same school. For her, it is like coming home. D2 is going to make it into her own school with her own experience.

Pinot - I think we all want to cram all this helpful advice in their heads. Is his brother there already? How is he getting from the airport to the dorm? Does he know where to go and what to do?

oldfort - you’re an empty nester now - how were the first few days without her?

We just saw that movie with Tommy Lee Jones, Meryl Streep and Steve Carrell - about the couple going to counseling when she realizes she wants more out of her marriage. While it was cringe worthy at times it’s a great reminder that we need to have a relationship with our spouses.

We are driving back this afternoon. We will have our good-bye lunch. I hope I don’t get too emotional. It is going to be an adjustment not to have a kid at home.

Now that D has launched, I have many things on my " to do" list at home but first, I’m going to selfishly work on my “for me” list. 1. Visit my hairdresser for an overdue cut and color. 2. Date night with DH to celebrate postponed anniversary. 3. Back to the gym to work off the fab food I ate all summer.

I’m also enjoying the launch stories! Hugs to all of you. I know I’ll be shedding tears once I get home and see D’s empty room.

Good job to all of you who have launched this weekend. I’m 3+ weeks behind you but it feels like it is coming quickly! lilmom, I think this is the time we deserve to be a little selfish. I’m sure we all have been focused on our kids this summer so the me time is well deserved.

eyemamom - I gave him $15 for a taxi from the airport to campus. I’m not sure where he goes to check in and get his room key, but I’m sure he’ll figure it out. I just realized we don’t usually check luggage, so he’s never had to find the luggage claim area, so he’ll have to figure that out too. He lands at 12:45 and doesn’t have to meet up with peoepl until 5:00, so he doesn’t have to be super efficient. S1 isn’t there yet - he can’t even move into his dorm until Saturday, so he, H, and I are all driving out Wednesday with two cars and all the stuff and staying in a hotel during freshman orientation, then moving S1 in to his dorm Saturday morning before leaving town. During Thurs and Fri he’s going to hang out and spend some time driving to Goodwill stores and the like to find a comfy chair for his dorm room. He’ll have a fairly big room to himself so he’ll actually have room for a nice reading chair this year. :)

Once we’re home and settled, we can turn the awesome and cringe worthy power of our complete and undivided attention to S3. I’m sure he’s thrilled!

Have to share this one. Just went to the store to buy cat food and liter and figured I would buy my kitties a toy. Facing me on the rack was “Empty Nester” cat toy. A little flattened mallard duck.

Clearly cat toy manufacturers know how to get their product bought by parents who are sending their kids to college.
