I am transferring to Cornell in the fall but received an incomplete in an independent study with one of my profs this semester due to illness. I made an agreement with my prof that since I would be leaving my present university, that I would complete the work and send it to him via email or through mail and agreed. However, I would only be able to start the work he has given to me this fall (because he is away for the summer) and my grade will only be changed at the end of the fall semester. However, I have to send my transcript to Cornell now and I am worried that they will rescind my acceptance because I have an incomplete. Does anyone know what I should do? If I contact them and explain my situation, do you think it would be okay?

I think your only choice is to contact Cornell and explain the situation. Incompletes are not all that uncommon -- as long as you don't have more than the one and your other grades look good, it shouldn't be a problem.

Make sure you get the work done ASAP and have an updated transcript sent to Cornell at that point.

thanks, who do you think i should contact? the admissions office?

I want to complete it ASAP but the prof is not there for the summer and so he said he would give me work over the fall and that he could change the grade by mid-semester (Fall) at the earliest.

Another alternative is that I could speak to the Dean about whether I could withdraw from the course and since it was an independent study and not required for my major (just an additional class) I may be able to. What do you think I should do?

I would talk to Cornell first and see if it is even an issue. If it is a problem --then you could do the withdrawal (if it is possible at this late date).

I'd certainly notify the Admissions office, but also include the Registrar's Office. And it might now hurt to have your prof e-mail Cornell confirming that you're planning to remove the Incomplete in the fall.
