Hey all. I'm a community college student studying in LA and trying to transfer. So I got into my top choice school, CalArts, and I'm waiting to hear about financial aid but I also got into the local art school with a pretty good scholarship. I went and toured the campus and met some people and I HATED it academically. It was totally not an environment I could ever picture myself liking. I really want to stay in Los Angeles, but my parents really want me to go home. They want me to help babysit my sister during the day, etc. and go to this school, but I really really don't like the idea of it. I feel really bad for not wanting to go home, but I don't want to be guilt-tripped into living in a place where I'm unhappy for the next four years. How do I tell my parents that I want to go to CalArts even though they want me to come home?

Speaking as someone who also had to convince her parents to let her dorm, I think you should just be honest and explain to them why the school isn’t a good fit for you and why CalArts is. And if your parents would struggle financially to pay for the extra housing fees, I think it’s only fair if you pay for it yourself (take out a loan or get enough scholarship money). Unless, of course, your parents would be ok with paying or you get the financial aid/scholarships for it.

Thanks sphan95. That definitely sounds fair. For now, I’m just going to wait and see what my financial aid offer looks like!
